dramaturgy and I have concluded, in re: Never No More and The Angriest Angel, that McQueen = Snoopy and Cooper = Woodstock. I demand iconage!
No S:AaB recap today, as I got distracted by the dishes while cold Case was on in the background, and then I returned to the living room to see Bones was on, and it was about a historical dig, and pirates, so of course I had to watch David Boroneaz get his glee on (awww, he's really not that bad when he's not playing Broody McMoperson), and um. "... Is that Rod Rowland?" Yep, my weird talent for switching on shows I never watch just for the eps starring certain obscure actors I like has struck again! This happens to me all the time with Adam Baldwin as well. Either I have some sort of weird homing device for these guys, or they're stalking me through the TV.
So this weekend in Bruges, a bunch of skinheads beat up a black guy, who is currently still in a coma. Yesterday afternoon, an eighteen-year old shot a Turskish woman, a black woman, and the two-year old (white) child she was babysitting. The Turkish woman is heavily wounded, the other two victims didn't survive. I just ... I'm almost not surprised about this, after watching the number of extreme right voters rise constantly since ... pretty much since I became politically aware, really, which would have been the early nineties, probably even before, but the first real Black Sunday was 1992, I believe. Something had to give in the end, and I can only hope that this is it, that it's not just a buildup to something bigger.
Oh, and then my mum got taken to the ER on Wednesyday with what looked like it could be a heart attack, then might have been lung cancer, but thankfully turned out to be "just" atypical pneumonia. I'm ... kind of glad I didn't hear of it until last night, actually, when there was an actual diagnosis, because I would have freaked the fuck out. Yeah.
As promised, by popular demand--and by "popular demand" I mean "dine and
snacky: Space: Above and Beyond recaps! Somewhat more detailed than the Firefly ones because, as noted, only three people on my friendslist actually know this show, so I figured I'd provide some context for my squeeing for those of you who don't.
Before I start the first episode, I kinda have to note that the fact that B5 is in the background of the menu screens always fills me with glee. Also, crossover urges, but I'm resisting those. Anyway, ( onward to the pilot! )
Eh, what the hell, I have time for another episode: ( The Farthest Man From Home. )
Watched Dr Who, which um. Yes. This is clearly the season in which the Doctor is a woobie. (*waves evilly at ruby_fruit*) More spoilery entry probably to follow separately so you can respond to this entry without clicking on a spoiler cut-tag. Aren't I thoughtful?
Watched bits and pieces of Space: Above and Beyond, and decided I'm going to do some recappish things like I did for Firefly. But first I have to do Serenity. (Because there's like three people on my friendslist who will actually be interested in my recaps for S:AaB, heh.)
Dreamt about SNAKES! On a PLANE! *facepalm* LJ has eaten my subconscious, obviously. DAMN YOU ALL!
Finally did some sewing I'd been putting off for ages, and then I figured hey, I might as well actually iron my jacket and shit for today as well, so here was, feeling all prepared and professional, with my ironed clothes and the seams on the sleeves of my jacket all sewn up, my shoes polished and all, and then this morning, a minute before I had to leave for work, I went to the loo, pulled up my trousers and ... busted the zipper. D'oh! Talk about an omnious start of the week, man.
Note: everybody needs to go take this poll.
Also, this icon in honour of Sven announcing the England World Cup team today. With two-thirds of my OT3 quite possibly out due to injury, and both of my other teams not even in the playoffs, this looks like it might be a very depressing footie season indeed. Woe.
The things you find while cleaning, man. I'm going through the stationary and paperwork and stuff, and um. Found my original, handwritten versions of just about all the stories I wrote between early 2000 and late 2003, back before my RSI got so bad I couldn't write by hand anymore. Things like Polar, Sin, the very first incarnation of Elfstone, back when that title was still, you know, applicable, and, to quote an e-mail I just sent to Amy, "an entire chapter of HP fic, plus notes on plotting, that I have absolutely no recollection of. I don't know where I was going with this, although judging by what I can still read from my notes, it was ambitious and epic and also Harry/Draco." I may type this up at some point, if only to share the bad. Ow.
Oh, dear lord, I found my teenaged emo-goth poetry. The only thing stopping me from burning it is my inner archeologist. My inner writer cares not for preservation for future generations, she just wants to pretend this never happened. *hides* (I wrote epic poetry, people! WTF, self, WTF.)
WTF, when did I write (the beginning of) a S:AaB/BtVS crossover? Clearly, I was on crack in the nineties. o_O
Awwww, my very first attempt at writing a fantasy novel, way back in ... *thinks* Christ, that must've been '94 or thereabouts. Holy crap. (Oddly enough, I'm a lot less embarassed about the things I wrote pre-puberty, possibly because I had no delusions of depth yet back then and just wrote fairy tales. Heh.)
And a whole bunch of my trying-to-draw stuff from the late nineties. Actually, some of this isn't too bad, I should get these scanned in.
[ETA] ... I'd forgotten just how much Biker Mice from Mars fanart I'd drawn back then. Ehehehe. Right. *cough*[/ETA]
So I'm idly browing Yuletide, and um. I think I may have finally found a fandom in which I cannot read slash. Mark your calenders, everyone. Heh.
Also, hey, someone wrote S:AaB fic this year, yay!
[ETA] And yet, Pippi Longstocking threesome fic? No problem! The Once and Future King slash? Glee! I am a freak and should just get over it and read the damned Tintin story already.[/ETA]
I need a shower, and to clean, and to bake cookies. But most of all, I need to track down whoever designed this DVD set, because I have a couple of questions to ask them:
One: What is this double-sided billshit? Surely you can fit four eps onto one disk without requiring me to get off my lazy arse and go flip the damn disk over. I demand an explanation!
Two: WHAT THE FUCK IS THE SPACE STATION BABYOLON 5 DOING ON THE MENUS? Huh? Huh? (No, I'm not hallucinating, other people have noticed this.) What the fuckity hell?
[ETA] "Don't worry, I'd still remember you." aslkdjasdjlaksdj This ep always kills me DEAD. God, it's been way too long since I saw it.[/ETA]
[ETA2] ... Psy Corps. I'd forgotten about this, probaly because this is one of my least favourite episodes, but ... god, the crossover possibilities. And is that that bloke from Stargate: Atlantis? He looks familiar.[/ETA2]
[ETA3] WTF I don't remember Toy Soldiers making me cry like this, back then. Of course, I couldn't quite emphasise with Shane's little "You've frozen him in time" speech quite as well as I can now. Sigh.[/ETA3]
[ETA4] Okay, whoever did these subtitles needs to be stabbed in the face. But the birds and the bees scene remains hilarious and adorable. Aw.[/ETA4]
*oozes fangirl all over the couch* OMG they all look so young!
[ETA] Mmmm dress uniforms so pretty.[/ETA]
[ETA2] Dude, Tucker Smallwood is kinda hot. And I can't stop staring at Kirsten Cloke's boobs. Um.[/ETA2]
Last episode of The Tribe. Am torn between going "Wheee, I finally get to see how it (temporarily) ends!" and "Wah no more Saturday morning goodness!"
Will be having big Space: Above and Beyond marathon later today. May expire from fangirl and from combination of Oldest Obsession and Newest Obsession. Have already lost pronouns. This does not bode well.
If you don't heare from me before tomorrow, avenge my fangirly death.
[ETA] "I am Ram's Master." Wow, they couldn't make the D/s subtext any thicker if they tried![/ETA]
[ETA2] OMG HOLD EVERYTHING BACK THE FUCK UP New series starting next Sunday? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEE!!!11!!!!11!
Um. I mean.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!![/ETA]
I currently am holding in my hand the full season of Space: Above and Beyond on DVD.
I think I may cry.
Went to see Fantastic Four with yonmei yesterday. Diagnosis: gay. Very, very gay. In fact, this is the gayest superhero movie to date, I would say. And it gave me a crossover bunny. (Or actually,
yonmei did), which I will now proceed to try and foist off on someone else. Anyone interested in a FF/popslash bunny? Anyone? Bueller?
Pimp: muse_secrets.
Interesting post about Ginny and her "slut" label in HP fandom.
Someone needs to write me more Ford/Arthur slash. *handwave* Make it so!
The lovely and loveable and wonderful Ms snacky alerted me to this: Space: Above and Beyond to come out on DVD on 6 September. *does a lot of flailing about* Okay, do I pre-order from Best Buy or exercise some patience and wait until it comes out over here? Considering this release is exclusive to BB ... *ponders* It is only £23 ...
Oh, crap, they don't ship outside the US. Booo! *hopeful look at friendslist* Is there anyone who could order for me and let me pay them back by PayPal?
Tonight is an edinburghers meetup, which I may or may not go to.
First day back at Building In The Middle Of Nowhere. Netscape won't connect on this network, I can't get breakfast here, and if I'd been to get food ten minutes later, I'd not have had any food, because the last veggie sandwich would be gone. Also, the airco here is set a lot lower. Blah. At least we're now on the ground floor, I suppose.
Have just watched M&C:TFSOTW. Have sent amatia plea for help re: same. Damn you, Russel Crowe!
In other news, a month or so ago, ladyjaida did this challenge thingie wherein she enticed people to write a story in their first fandoms, and I can't stop occasionally worrying at the idea. Long time readers will be rolling their eyes now, as I've been doing the dance of "I want to write something decent for Space: Above and Beyond for several years now, and sigh. There's no real point to this paragraph. Just ignore me.
Vanessa: You're De Niro, girl.
... I just felt like sharing my favourite femslash moment of all times.
We now return you to your reglarily scheduled monkeys friends page.
Also, I would like someone to write Shane/Nathan/Coop, please? Thanks.
Um, Ara? Any chance you could dub me some of your S:AaB tapes?
(Edit: Summary: Shane has to face her biggest challenge ever... leaving the Corps and being a mum Say what? Oh, for fuck's sake, people, not her! Don't mess with my Shane, goddammit!)
If any of you have seen Space: Above and Beyond, and feel like a new fandom, please, I'm begging you, I need someone to share this obsession with! Please? Pretty please?

(Edit: Can I just poin out that despite the "posted" date being late 1998, I actually posted it to the list early1998, and I wrote it in 1996-1997? When I was sixteen? During math? In high school? God, I'm old.)
