This is making me realise I have some serious Draco issues. Self, he's a fictional character! Kindl stop being freaked out/scared/whatever because "people are judging him for what he's like at fourteen!" Because really, if you use that little grey mass that is your brain, you know they're completely right.

And you know, i'll take the issues over the fucking apologists any damn day, thanks.

Because I'm contrary that way

That discussion is really making me want to finish the story where he and Harry have made an alliance and they're sleeping together and happy about it.

I really am sorry, Melle, but I can't bring myself to like him. I don't have any problems with people who do like him, but I just don't get it. Maybe because he makes me remember my grade school days when white boys used to taunt me with "Go back to where you came from, Paki" every time I was in school.

Whatever the case is, I don't like Draco, but I know there are people out there who do and, while I don't get it, I don't want to discourage people from liking who they like. I don't have that right and I don't want to force anyone to feel bad for liking Draco. I am sorry if my dislike of him made you feel freaked out/scared/whatever. That honestly was not my intention.

Re:

Oh, no, really, I mean. I understand the dislike, intellectually. (And somewhat emotionally, too. i want to give the boy a kick in the backside somethnig bad!)

Like I said, personal issues and experience with people who were complete bastards at 14 and turned out to be okay people in later years makes it hard for me to completely condemn him.

And frankly, what you people said doesn't come close to what I saw Back In The Days before the whole Draco-hype. (Never thought I'd miss that time. I want my fandom back! ^_^)

Ok, there have been half a trillion deep serious discussions in the last few days, and I've stayed out of every single one of them, so I'm gonna muster up all my courage and stick in my .02 here.

I don't like Draco. Then again, I don't like Sirus either. It's just my opinion, I know there are a lot of people who like Draco and a lot of people who like Sirius, and hey, more power to them. Am I judging Draco by what he was like at 14? I sure am. It's been my experience that people who are assholes at 14 tend to be assholes well into adulthood. But I am open to change. If in book 5, 6, or 7 Draco stops being an asshole, I might reconsider my opinion of him. I've read fic with Draco in it, and if the author made a good enough case why I should like Draco, I put my dislike aside for the duration of the story.

I do understand about your issues, though. I may not 100% understand them, but I've had my own fictional character issues, so I sorta get where you're coming from.

Well, I don't particularly care for Draco either way. He's not one of my favorites, Snape sort of destroyed any chances he might have had in that particular running. Though I do like hurting Harry and Draco is usually willing to help out in that department... He's got a nice sadistic streak if you ask him politely. *whistles innocently*

Well, there are already about 6,789,480 of 'em out there, but don't let that put you off. LOL.

Could I believe a fic where Draco changes, evolves and gets past all his many, many, many...issues? Yes, but it would take a writer of exceptional talent making exceptional effort to pull it off and thus far I haven't seen a one that I buy. More often it's like that Lady of Shalott series everyone was so wild over: "Draco raped me! And just like that, we're in *love!* Wow, *that* was easy!" Give me a fucking break.

Re Sirius: He's one of those characters whom I think, if I knew him in reality, I actually would dislike and stay away from--I get the impression, and I cheerfully acknowledge I may be completely wrong, of someone who has (had?) a trigger temper and a real streak of cruelty in his personality. I mean, that little trick he pulled on Snape in the Shrieking Shack when they were kids not only could have led to someone's death, it would have led to Sirius's ostensible best friend, whose *incredibly stigmatizing secret* Sirius was allegedly guarding, emerging from his altered state to realize he'd been enticed into a murder. I mean, if *that's* how you treat your friends, I don't wonder so much that Remus believed Sirius committed Pettigrew's crimes.

Sorry for rambling, but I'm knee-deep in writing these youngsters and you gave me some food for thought. :-)

Re: Because I'm contrary that way

I'm just pointing out that it's a gesture of "defiance" that's already been done to death. Of course, everything in this fandom has already been done to death, so Godspeed.

Re: hmm

But that's *wholly* believable Draco characterization, LOL. Do carry on. ;-)

Just when I think I'm safe from the Harry Potter addiction, you go and mention Snape's past. Now I need to read the third book. Yeesh, this series is like metaphorical crack-cocaine--one read and you're hooked!

Which is EXACTLY why I don't like him. And he was, what, 16 at the time? Old enough to understand what he was doing, and to have taken responsibility for it, and as far as I can tell he never did. If you think about it, they never really said how close the rescue was, for all we know, James was in danger of being killed too. And then Sirius would have caused REALLY big problems :)

Sorry for rambling, but I'm knee-deep in writing these youngsters and you gave me some food for thought. :-)

Wow, at least I'm good for SOMETHING :)

Honey, you NEED to read the third book! There's good reason why it seems to be everyone's favorite, trust me. :-) And then the fourth as well, c'mon, know you wanna...

Re: Because I'm contrary that way

I think I know which story Ruth's talking about (Ruth? Is this the one I (unwittingly) "inspired"?) and I don't really think it's been done to death. or at all. The basic plot point, yes, but not Draco's characterisation and motivation.

Re:

See, I'm not even talking about fanfic here, I'm talking about the actual books. I seriously don't believe JKR's just gonna have gim join the DE just like that, simply because he's a Malfoy, and will follow in his father's footsteps.

As for that series, I didn't read that as such. To me, it's all Stockholm syndrome, and quite brilliant at that. (I know there's an "alternate ending" out there where they do "fall in love", but I'm not fond of that.)

Honestly...

I loathe canon-Draco. Can't stand him, if I'm to be blunt.

But...

I'm an optimist.

And I can see the possibility of redemption.

That doesn't mean he should be perfect or sweet, or even nice.

I remember a character on one of the soaps (actually, she was the Cassandra who inspired my RPS pseud :), and she started out as a mystery woman, appeared to be a calculating killer and ended up as a deliciously witty bitch, who wasn't nice at all.

I could so see Draco ending up as the male equivalent. One of those obnoxious-yet-strangely-endearing rich young men.

Yes, it is. But, you know, if it has Harry and Draco together and happy about it, then that's obviously trite and silly and something that just Should Not Be Done.
