Melle: Randomly, what is it about Americans and teeth?
Mireille: LOL. Years of enforced orthodontia.
Melle: Which is prolly why I don't mind Marcus' as much.
Melle: I HATE the Straight White Hollywood Teeth.
Mireille: I can understand that.
Melle: Just. Ugh.
Melle: mostly cause mine are yellow (smoke) and crooked (sucked thumb until I was twelve, and hello, I wonder if that's why marcus' teeth are weird.)
Mireille: LOL. Actually, that would explain a lot.
Mireille: Mine are close to Straight White Hollywood, but that's because they were so bad when I was little that I could barely chew.
Melle: Hee. Marcus. Suckig his thumb. That image is so ... something.
Mireille: Deeply wrong?
Melle: Kind of adorable is what I was going for. Adorably wrong!
Mireille: That works. Oh, that would go a long way to explain the bad-ass attitude, if he still sucked his thumb first year....
Melle: Considering the teeth, prolly still!
Melle: Heeeeee!
Melle: Okay, am on crack.
Mireille: Yes, you are. As am I, because one day you'll probably see that somewhere.
Melle: Heeeee! I love youuuu!
Mireille: I won't *mean* to, but it'll turn up.
Melle: **snicker** Sure you won't. :D
Mireille: You know I will. Oliver will wake up in the middle of the night and discover that Marcus sucks his thumb.
Melle: Marcus sucking Oliver's thumb? I'm not sure whether I should die frmo the cutness or from laughter.
Mireille: *rolls eyes*

I know! And he'd so totally pound me into oblivion if I said that to his face, but heee! God. So cute!

re: Americans and teeth. I had to get braces, but never wore my retainer, so... You know, they're not that straight, still. :) But yeah. I remember watching this thing on ET or some other Show About Hollywood, and there was some girl who wanted to act and had perfectly decent teeth having to go in and get all her teeth capped because they weren't white and square enough.

I think Julia Roberts' teeth has something to do with my profound dislike for her.

I'm really rather obsessed with teeth, too. And I'm sure as heck not American. ;)

He'd pound you into oblivion for even suggesting he sucked his thumb, never mind even commenting on how adorable it is. hee! Cute cute cute!

Re:

I just. Don't get it. They're teeth. You eat with them. And okay, I have issues about mine, but they're just oddly crooked. But. Why the obsession? I don't get it.

Most Americans would say "hygeine." But that's also the reason given for, say, shaving your pits or wearing deodorant, neither of which is terribly true. So... no idea.

I honestly don't know what it is with Americans and their teeth. But I had a terrible underbite and that affected the alignment of my teeth, so I had a great deal of orthodontic work done when I was little (the school of dentistry I got treated at still uses me as a teaching case ^.^). But yeah. I think we just have a very powerful dentists' lobby or sommat in Washington that forces the perception that white straight teeth=good and anything else=nasty and icky.

Man, I don't get it, either, especially since nobody seems to care about teeth in real life. It's probably partly because I have yellow, snaggly teeth myself - and I don't even have the excuse that I smoke or sucked my thumb, just a lazy mom who never took me to the dentist - but it's gotten so I actually respect actors more if they have bad teeth. How frelling stupid, I know.

Straight, white teeth to go with the straight, white men. It's a conspiracy!

But, seriously, on the issue of teeth. Mine are not aligned. The only way to fix it is for me to have surgery in which they break my jaw and put it back together. Needless to say, I've learned to live with my unaligned teeth. The side affect, however, is that my top teeth only touch my bottom teeth in four places, none of which are in the front. In practical situations, this means I can't bite through the lettuce in a sandwich or the cheese on pizza

I think the idea of most people is, that if you don't have straight white teeth, you don't brush. And if you don't brush, your mouth is full of icky germs. At least, that seems to be the view on it. I wish it wasn't, cause I had braces when I was younger. Lemme tell ya, those things are horrible. Tho, due to lack of me wearing a retainer, they aren't perfectly straight, but close enough.

Besides, sometimes it just gets weird. I used to know this girl in school who had such crooked teeth her two front ones were parallel to each other. See, thats just plain creepy, and not in a good way.

Re:

Well, if it's functional, sure. But. Okay, my teeth are crooked, but it's just the front ones. They're kinda ... pulled to one side, due to sucking my thumb all the time. My two front teeth form a little inward "v". But I can eat and all just fine, yet somehow, according to the teeth fascists, I should wear retainers? Eh?

Re:

No, I completely understand. To me, the WSHTeeth are distracting, to the point where, when I hear of an actor getting teeth corrections, I wail, because that means I need to ignore their mouths, now. Grr.

Biting fetish. ;)

But I'm not entirely sure why. I don't mind if they're a little crooked (my own lower front teeth are) or if they're not bright white (which does look unnatural), but I do pay attention and I just don't find yellow or very crooked teeth all that attractive.
