Especially about fandom. because I'm actually bothered by the fact that I can't reconsile my love of AUs with my personal stance in the nurture vs nature debate. Good AUs are very much a ... proof? celebration? something of the "nature" argument. I'm a strong believer in the nurture argument. And yet, I love AUs. A lot. "A lot."

See, for me, a good AU is all about taking characters and putting them in different universes. Right? And you have to keep these people in character, because otherwise it wouldn't be fanfic anymore. (Or at least, mostly in characters, she says, thinking of Justin et al in Sin.) So despite the fact that they're in completely different environments, they're still laregely the same as they turned out in this world, where they're SDB, thus supoprting the idea that who and how they turned out as were largely predetermined from birth, and not influenced all that much by how and where they grew up.
