And why should they? No one is put on this world to comply to the
majority's opinion, especially since the majority isn't always right.

By doing things like this, R.E.M. are sending a message to the world
that yes, there are gay people in the world, and they have as much right
as straight people to publicly show their affection. I happen to think
that's a good thing, and I applaud them for this.

I would like to think that Mike, being friends with a bisexual man
(Michael, duh) has raised his son with the principle that there is
nothing wrong with being gay, and/or with loving someone of the same
sex. There probably isn't anything more disgusting or shocking about
seing his dad kssing Michael than there would be about him kissing a
woman.

In the song 'With or Without You' when it says 'and you give yourself
away' - everybody else in the group knows what that means. It's about
how I feel in U2 at times - exposed. (Bono)

Some people

are so pig ignorant it isn't funny.

Sometimes the ones who THINK they're not homophobic, but say stupid shit, are more annoying than the outright unapologetic homophobes, IMHO. The ones who are all, "I've got nothing against gay people, BUT..." It's that BUT that is the clue.

Re: Some people

Yeah. BUT, we can't beopen about our sexuality, we can't show that we'e gay, we can't do with our SO's i public what every damn m/f couple is allowed to do.

(Me name is Melle, and I'm pissed. :)

Whoo! *applauds loudly* Oh, by the way, I found the Dave quote! :-D I made an entry for it in my journal.

Exactly! I mean, for so long, the majority of people on this earth believed it to be flat. Americans thought slavery was totally acceptable. Everyone thought the Macarena was totally kickass. The majority does *not* necessarily equal the absolute truth.

By doing things like this, R.E.M. are sending a message to the world that yes, there are gay people in the world, and they have as much right

Damn straight they have as much right! *high fives you*

Maybe this person (that you are responding to) has never been around anyone who is gay. My sister is like that. I think that she's mostly disturbed by homosexuality because she's never been exposed to it.

That is *such* a good point. I guess that we as humans always assume that everyone in the world thinks exactly the way we do. This person has evidently never been told that two men or two women in love is an acceptable thing. I know I was never told that; I figured it out on my own.

I really do believe that education can eliminate intolerance. I think that when children are sheltered from absolutely everything (the way I was, thanks mom!! >_<), or when they are taught that different is bad, etc, they grow up to be hopelessly intolerant people.

I still can't figure out how it is that I'm the only tolerant person in my entire family.

And aside from that, I'm getting rather tetchy about people assuming that their opinion is the majority's opinion. But that's me.

You're probably right. This is why a lot of people say things like "I don't like gays, but this one gay person I know is okay. But (s)he's an exception."

That is *such* a good point. I guess that we as humans always assume that everyone in the world thinks exactly the way we do. This person has evidently never been told that two men or two women in love is an acceptable thing. I know I was never told that; I figured it out on my own.

I was raised with the principle that all people are equal and should have the same rights. If I saw my dad snogging another man, I'd be upset to see him cheating on my mom, but not because it was with another man.

(Well, I'd be a tad grossed out, cause, well, he's my dad. parents are not supposed to have sex. ^_^)

Hahaha! ^_^ Yes, sex and parents don't mix, although logically they do.

Yuck.

Now I have bad mental images. >_
