So I overslept this morning, meaning I was on the train for most of the time Belgium was playing Russia. We had to win to go on to the next round. When I was buying newspaper before getting on the train, the owner of the shop was listening to the radio.

Me: "So what's the score?"
Him: "1-0 for us. They're doing pretty good. Scored after seven minutes"
Me: "Yay. Thanks."

And then on the train, some bloke who gets the play-by-play of the match text messaged to his cell phone announced the Russians had scored (at 52 minutes). (

They announced the 2-1 when I was on the metro (78 mins), and by the time I got into the office and got my browser open to the live report from the BBC, it was 3-1 (82 mins).

This is why I love this country: everybody follows the football. :)

Eventually, Russia scored again at 88 mins, but we won, and we're through to the eighth finals. Wooooo!

Play-by-play report of the game here.

Edit: Of course, this means we'll be playing either Turkey or Brazil in the second round. I'm hoping for Brazil, because if we play Turkey, I don't really want to be around for the riots that will probably erupt no matter who wins.

Edit 2: Look what [livejournal.com profile] flabbergast pointed me to! Squeee! )

Hugging and cuddling and wheeeee

Okay, so here's where we stand on the U2 slash archive. [livejournal.com profile] izzybeth has a domain name, loveisblindness.net, which I personally think would be great for the archive, but she doesn't have any space. [livejournal.com profile] arami can donate webspace, and Mol, I'm assuming that offer for help incuded some webspace? (I don't think your-site allows you to have a domain name pointing to a subfolder on your space, though. :/) I can do the design of the archive, no problem, and Izzy's offered to maintain the archive once it's up.

So, how's this for a plan? Depending on whether we can point the domain name towards a subfolder on acherontia.net or passionblood.net, and who has the most space left, we can host the archive at either, and have the domain name point there. I'll design the archive and make sure it's easy to maintain (Iz, do you have Frontpage or anything?), and Iz can be the archivist.

Yes? No?

Heee. That's the spirit, boys.

I'd like to note two things. One: I love that they're all a little pudgy. Love that. Two: I'm oddly enthralled with the image of the flag. I think I'll make that into my default football icon. Well, flipped, of course, cause the Belgian flag is black-yellow-red. (Random anecdote;: in the constitution, it actually says red-yellow-black, but it's always been displayed the other way round. We're a strange country, us.)

Yeah, that's the thing! Hug and cuddle and be slashy, then we'll win this thing! (I'm not entirely jkoking, either.

So, yeah, in case any of you think I'm joking when I say slash rules my life ...

Tomorrow, England plays second round against Denmark. monday, Belgium plays against Brazil. If both England and Belgium win, they'll be playing each other in the quarter finals.

I really, really don't want that to happen. Because I want to cheer for Belgium, because they're my country, but I have a soft spot for England, too and argh!

So I'm hoping one of them gets kicked in the second round. And I'm hoping it's Belgium, because going out against Brazil would be honourable (even if they do have that fucker of a Rivaldo), and then I'd not have to feel guilty for cheering on England from then on and I don't want belgium to win and England to lose because Beckham! Owen! soinlove! (Sorry, Silvia. :)

My love for slash is strongre than my love for my country. *wail*
