Me: "So what's the score?"
Him: "1-0 for us. They're doing pretty good. Scored after seven minutes"
Me: "Yay. Thanks."
And then on the train, some bloke who gets the play-by-play of the match text messaged to his cell phone announced the Russians had scored (at 52 minutes). (
They announced the 2-1 when I was on the metro (78 mins), and by the time I got into the office and got my browser open to the live report from the BBC, it was 3-1 (82 mins).
This is why I love this country: everybody follows the football. :)
Eventually, Russia scored again at 88 mins, but we won, and we're through to the eighth finals. Wooooo!
Play-by-play report of the game here.
Edit: Of course, this means we'll be playing either Turkey or Brazil in the second round. I'm hoping for Brazil, because if we play Turkey, I don't really want to be around for the riots that will probably erupt no matter who wins.
Edit 2: Look what
flabbergast pointed me to!

And no, I've only watched the England games and the Belgium games. When was this? And doesn't Rivaldo "Ow! My FACE!" play for Brazil? Cause then I have to hate them on principle.

aww.
*giggles* yeah, he does... 'ow, my face'? did he pull a classic Hollywood or something?
(that being local slang for holding up a game in any sport by over emphasising injury... )

Rivaldo: *stands near corner*
Other team player: *lobs ball, presumibly trying to get it out*
Rivaldo: *gets hit in the thigh/hip by ball, falls down grasping face*
IIRC, the ref called a penalty, which turned out to be the winning goal for Brazil. Might be wrong on that one.
And yes! Watch the gaaaames! Especially England. Come join us in Beckham-love and watch him wrap his legs around his teammates and be all cuddly with Owen and eeee!
