Augh. So my internet connection at home was done yesterday, got briefly fixed for a bit, then went down again. I'm connecting through my mobile (as a modem) now, which works, but is slow, so no WoWing for me until this gets fixed, which may be a few days. Boo, says I!

*sigh* I need to talk to you, too, about stuff, but I guess it'll wait till morning....

Can't connect to Trillian, but I can do e-mail? Mebbe?

Watch out doing that, you might get a nasty bill for data usage. :o/ My O2 contract charges me £4/meg after the first meg, and it's fairly typical for non-'unlimited' accounts.

I do have an unlimited account -- well, "unlimited" being up to 2 GB (possibly even 2.5GB, but I'm playing it safe until I remember to look it up) a month, and I'm keeping an eye on it. :)

T-Mobile. It's their Web 'n Walk package -- £7/month for "unlimited" data transfer. Which, you'd kind of have to try, and/or use it as your primary web connection all month, to really hit the limit on a relatively slow connection like this, I'd say.

You should double-check - I don't think that the standard Web n Walk allows it to be used as a modem. (Or IM, and some other junk - it's why I'm using Web n Walk Plus which only forbids VoIP) It'll work, but if they notice it they'll send you a warning or possibly cut off your internet access.

OTOH, if you're already using WnW Plus, then nevermind. :o)

Hm, AFAICT, they don't forbid it, although they do have a specific Plus option for laptops, in which they seem to charge for a data card (I'm connecting through the Nokia Suite) and a higher transfer limit.

(And I just got your second comment, so never mind. :D Yeah, it'll only be for a few days, and I doubt they'll notice that anyway.)

I use Plus on my phone - which I also use as a modem over bluetooth. The main thing with Plus is that all of those 'you can't' things go away, apart from VoIP. Pro ups the data limit to 10GB and takes away the VoIP ban, but cost way too much for me.

The nice thing with my phone is that it's HSDPA 'broadband' 3G. In theory, I should be able to get over 1mbps on this thing. In practice, I get more like 200-500 kbps. Which is still pretty awesome for reading LJ on the bus.

Speaking of which, I need to go and get the bus. You'll probably see me in an hour and a half running into work. :oD

Yeah, without a laptop, and with the handset I have the Plus option wasn't worth it for me. I doubt I'll ever again have to use it as a modem, but it's nice to have a backup connection just in case.

Since I was curious, this is the blurb for normal WnW (which is ~£7/month, depending on stuff):

Provides unlimited browsing on mobile handsets in the UK. Not applicable to connection via CSD. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data (both sent and received) of up to 1GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 1GB of data and ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied. Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging. If such use is detected, notice may be given after which network protection controls may be applied. The application of network protection controls will result in a reduced speed of transmission.

So it looks like the worst that would happen is they'll write to you and go 'oi! no!', by which time you'll have normal internet back anyway. So ignore me, and yay. :o)
