Have just finished watching Serenity. Will report back, possibly with blow-by-blow recap like for the series, once have finished wibbling. I'll be in my bunk. Wah.

Yisyisyis. Exactly. Like, the actual "facts" of the rescue could be integrated, so to speak, between series and movie canon, with a minimum of handwaving, but trying to explain why Simon is all take-charge and competent when rescuing River and then all bumbling in Jaynestown? Eh.

Although, he's pretty competent in Ariel as well, so maybe it's just that Mal (IIRC?) kinda sprung it on him, in Jaynestown?

It was sprung on him, but he's still Simon, you know? Incompetent is practically his middle name, unless he's being a doctor. I mean, it's part of his charm. Also, he actually states in the series that he got people to get River out for him. You think he'd say that he got her out, but he says he paid others, quite explicitly. So yeah.

I also quite like that the movie leaves them in a place where they won't be chased any more, but I can't believe the Academy would actually give her up that easily. Even if the secret of Miranda is out, you think her existance in general would be too much of a danger. You'd think they wouldn't want a living, functional example of exactly what they're doing to children/teenagers actually walking around and being Crazy In The Head and crap.

Of course, it's just the character's believe that she's home free now, so she might not be anyway. (I'd set Hogwards In Space somewhere between the series and the movie if I were you. Unless the comics make that impossible, I don't know, I haven't read them.)

Good point, actually--in Ariel he was pretty much just playing himself, or at leat himself as he used to be before becoming a fugitive.

Indeed. If I were trying to topple the Alliance, or at least try and get people to be sympathetic to the anti-Alliance side, especially in the Core, I'd want to show River, have Simon do a wee "This is your brain. This is your brain on the Academy." presentation, show how fucked-up River's become, and then point out to people that this could be your daughter/sister/niece.

Even with the secret of Miranda being out, River's still a potential danger to the Alliance, and that's not even mentioning that the Academy probably wants its star pupil back.

Haven't read the comics, actually, and I'd not consider those canon either way, I don't think. I think I could make it work post-movie, except then I have to deal with Washnot being there anymore. Also, Book, who is either a squib or a wizard himself, I think.

Ezacly! WE CANNOT HAVE STORY WITHOUT WASH.

Omg. Maybe Book is a long-distant relative of Dumbledore's. Kind of like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars! One of the last surviving of a long-dead belief/power system, who knows but cannot speak about it. Totally could be!

I dunno if I want to have an actual connection to canon HP characters, I think it might ... give things away too soon? Something like that. (Also, I think Book is a wizard, like most Operatives, hence why they can disappear like that. And why River fraeks out, cause she knows, sort of, I think? And Jayne is a squib!)

If he is connected to Dumbledore (which I still quite like ^^; ) it would have to be quite a minor point. Like just mentioned in passing that he was related to one of the greatest wizards/an old principal of the school/one of the rebellion leaders in the last time of darkness, and just let people make the connection. And/or only mention his name much later on when it's all clear and stuff. But yeah, I totally think he should be a wizard. ^___^

IMO, the comics should definitely be considered canon - written by Joss, and all. They're not just a random spin-off, they're supposed to be canon.
