Re: Ramble for the day

It's semi-(auto)biographical, and my take on it is that they smushed Hailie Jade and Nathan into one character.

About the abuse thing: There's something about the way she looks at him and the way she talks to him about her sex life that made me think she sexually abused him, although I doubt the moviemakers intended that and I don't think that anyone else would see it that way. Well, except maybe for Molly, but she's twisted that way. But anyone with any sense of what a healthy/functional family dynamic is will be able to see that they're a dysfunctional family.

I think that in terms of what the moviemakers are thinking, Rabbit's trying to protect Lily from the neglect that seems to be what's most clearly abusive in terms of what we see the mother do with Lily.

So I don't know how much of that is taken from Em's real life. I think his family was definitely dysfunctional, but I don't know how abusive Debbie really was.

Another issue around Lily: Rabbit tries to give her as much love and protection as he can, but he also hates living in his mother's trailer and does everything in his power to be away as much as possible, so he's also stuck in this cycle of neglect
