I think annoying is in the definition of "Mary Sue".

I doubt Astra would qualify anyway. She's not like me, Draco and Hermione are her only friends, and she's a bit insane, although there's a reason for that. I know what's going on with her, but the characters in the story don't, and I don't want to talk about it to you because I keep thinking that if I do, then the characters will find out too.

It's not so much that you would blab (although you never know), but that if I talk about it, then they'll know. I know, I know. It's weird. But that's what I keep thinking.

Perhaps, but it's out of character for me. I get irritated with people who talk about their characters as if they exist independently, and I'm generally very conscious of the fact that my characters are products of my brain and that I'm in control of them. So it's weird to have this thought that they might independently find things out.

Hm. I find it easier to see them as independent enteties, because it makes it easier for me to ... Well, to keep myself out of the story, so to speak -- to avoid self-insertion and to let the story flow naturally instead of trying to push it to where I think it should go.

(I used to have that problem a lot. Much of my older stories have obvious deus-ex-machinas et al. in them.)

But people use the "they have a mind of their own" thing to justify whatever it is they're doing. It irritates me. I don't want to fall into that. I'm responsible for what they do, and I know it.

True, true. On the other hand, if I'm too aware that I'm responsible for what they do, I start interfering too much with the natural flow of the plot, and that always shows (with my stories, anyway), and I know I hate that in other people's fiction, so I try my best to avoid it in mine.

I just can't stand the way other people talk about their muses. It makes me want to yell at them: Admit it's all coming out of your own head, dammit!
