Hrm. Thinking about NaNoWriMo, and now I'm thinking maybe I won't write Shintaid for that, because it's too late already, I think, and that story and world are dead in my head, alas! Maybe I'll write that SF&F hybrid I mentioned.

Stories dead in your head are almost impossible to write, yes. But if you go for the latter option, me advises getting some idea of what you want the plot to be before you start. Maybe that's cheating, but I did last year anyway, and will again this year, if I decide I've got time to participate.

Oh, I'm planning to get the plot fleshed out before I start, if only because I'll have to do a lot of plotting just to get the rules of magic and its intreaction with technology te al internally consistant. Also, I almost always plot out what I want to write at least vaguely.
