Dude, can someone tell me who the guitarist (picture here) in *NSync's band is? Because I think I'm developing a crush, here.
Dude! (*moment of glee over the absolute widespreadness of the acronym RPS*) Ha! And they even mention Metallica slash! :D Although I've never read this particular story. Hm. *reads on* Sigh. Why, oh why must they always pic the pure smut examples? Why? It's not just about the sex, you fuckers!
Recs o' the Day, because I am a lemming: Fatone's by Shuyler -- It's wonderful. Because there are all these boys, and they're cooking! Cooking! Aaand my food kink rears its head. And Nick and Justin are dishwashers, which shouldn't be as hot as my brain is making it, and there's lambs cubed, and ChoeC, and Rats! And all these wonderful, wonderful people and eee! Go read!
"Ashley!" Justin called, pulling off his dirty apron. "Tell Lance we're taking a break." Ashley nodded as Justin hung his apron and followed Nick out the back door. "Oh lord." He arched his back and flexed his bare arms to release the tension; he'd been standing over a sink since opening. Nick passed him a cigarette. "You're a godsend."Nebraska by Jae -- Jae has a gift for tearing my heart out, picking it apart, and then putting the pices back together in a different order. That metaphor probably makes no sense to anyone but me, but that's what it's like. And in this particular series, she does it to the tune of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, which is only one of my favourite albums of all time."I'm a dishwasher." The cool night air raised goosebumps on Nick's damp arms. He took a deep breath and his white t-shirt pulled tight across his chest. Justin passed the cigarette back and Nick noticed how the light over the door colored the freckles on Justin's shoulder and how Justin's pretty pretty lips shaped as he blew out the smoke.
"I'm going to hell," Chris said, slumping in his seat.... And now I feel the urge to copycat and do a similar thing with Dylan's Blood On The Tracks -- or maybe Blonde on Blone. Dammit!Justin's grin slid into something tighter, more knowing. "You been singing that song for years now, old man," he chuckled. "Maybe you ought to find a new one."
"I don't know what you're laughing about," Chris said. "Cause if I'm going to hell, you know you're gonna be right beside me."
Justin glanced over and caught Chris' eye. "You know it," he said softly. He smiled at Chris. "You know it."
Randomly, the Medleys mpgs are the cure for any bad mood. No matter how shitty my day is, watching those medleys, seeing Justin smile that brilliant, beautiful smile at Chris when they switch places during the Temptations medley, and they Chris wmiles back and he starts singing and it's all so gorgeous, and JC is singing Hey Jude and so very into it, and Joey during Twist and Shout and Lance is just so happy being up there and dancing and singing and I just love humanity at large.

I don't get it, either - every time I see essays on fanfic, particularly slash, by people who aren't involved in fandom themselves, the examples quoted are always, without fail, a.) schmoopy crap or b.) smutty crap. Always. It's one thing when the purpose of the essay is to show what a bunch of losers we fanfic types are, but in neutral pieces? Maybe they just didn't feel like doing enough research to find a good story, since it's very easy to find crap and much harder to find the good stuff.

There've been articles on slash before ff.net got big, but the people writing these articles would have to have some interaction with the people actually writing the stuff. Maybe I'm being biased, but it seems like pre-ff.net articles on slash always had at least one quote of an author about why she writes slash.
Sigh. I am a bitter, whithered old fangirl.

The thing that struck me
I don't know why I'm surprised. I don't actually know very much about the band, I didn't think they were still around, to be honest.
But I am surprised. I'll presume it's on ff.net, so I won't even hope it's readable...not after finding a The Skulls slash on there that was not good.

Why they focus on smut
The reason? Simple. Sex sells. And it is unusual in that it's women writing this stuff and it's a) explicit at all and b) m/m. Of course people are going to be interested in it for that angle, how could they not be? It is what the outside world first sees when they see slash. I have no idea if articles on het fic focus on the sex or not, though I do remember the article I first read on fanfic (before I was into it) did mention that X-Files fic ran the gamut from case files to erotica about Mulder and Scully.
But it's better when the article writer gets into other aspects. Doesn't happen often enough, though.
