I think Silvia and Bartleby have both made excellent points about this, but here's my contribution to the list of Theories On Why People Hate Boybands.

Now, I'm not usually one to draw the feminist card, but in this case, I'm going to. I think that (one of? part of?) the (underlying?) reason why so many people hate boybands is that they appeal to and are (largely) marketed towards young girls. As Silvia said, all bands are marketed, so why are the boybands catching the flack for it? My answer is, because they're marketed towards girls. Girls - or women in general, for that matter - are not supposed/allowed to have good musical taste. Any band or artist they like is automatically suspect, and if they like a band or artist that is generally liked by men, they're in it for the wrong reasons.

Women who don't play the male market (by playing on their sex appeal towards men) are often seen as whiny things, especially when their songs are about "women's issues" (quotation marks because I think rape is a universal issue, thank you; being a man does not absolve you from having to think/worry about rape). All-male bands appealing to a mostly-female audience? The horror! (Whereas bands like Limp Bizkit, who appeal primarily to a v. young male audience (and are thus as Silvia said a boyband for boys), get much less flack for it, because of course no matter how young they are, boys are allowed/expected to have musical taste.)

I'm not sure how much sense that made, but I'm hoping you got the gist of it.

When i was on wrestling lists there were a couple of people who would always bitch about the hardy boys because they were teen idols but seemed to consider it perfectly alright that there were no women there who weren't purely for male amusement.... having said that some people just hate boy groups because of their lack of musical talent and hate comparoitive girl groups/performers just as much. When i was at the age that boy groups are normally sold to what irked me about them was the patronising idea that girls would buy shit like that just for the faces attacted and real bands were considered "boys" music.
It's not just boy groups either, it's books/movies etc aimed at women are just as bad. It's seen as fine to sell sex to men, but women get force fed romantic crap all the time because it isn't seen as okay for them to just think about sex.

Ah, see, that's actually a good point, and I completely agree with you. It is annoying (and one of the reasons I don't like het unless it's written/recced by a slasher) that women aren't supposed/allowed to have actual real-live sex drives/lives, at least not without being perceived as sluts.

But you know, that's less the actual boybands' fault, or even the fault of the people marketing them, and more society's fault. :/

*just read your post on singing* thats something i hadn't c0onsidered either, that one (i do anyway)does tend to think that way. In one of the 50s movies, i think it's "the girl can't help it" everyone goes on about how the crooners and balladeers are proper singers and the rock & rollers are just a bunch of noisy kids so probably the emphisis for rock music formed on music rather than singing because thats what made it different.It's certainly true that a lot of the 50s singers weren't great and you don't here people moaning that they didnt play intruments.
