And I still think it's just a fucking tad hypocritical when people who're all "uneasy" about RPS because, and I quote, it's disrespectful and makes puppets out of real people, suddenly find themselves not uneasy about it when the person in question has been dead for a while. In and of itself, that's a question of personal quasiness, but when you take this sort of morally superior tone, it sounds incredibly hypocrite.

Bugger all, anyway. I'm sick of this shit. Let them wallow in their moral superiority, let them tell themslves we're disrespectful and mean and stalkers-in-training. I'll be sitting in my corner with the RPSers and those who don't give a damn, and I'll be having fun squaling over pretty boys and cosmic connections, and have fun!

Jesus. Now I'm morally inferiour because of what kind of fun I chose to have. Hello, this is reality calling. We'd like you back any time now.

Um. Yeah. I have Issues. But that's okay, because I also have fun.

Anyway, yes, couldn't agree more.

You know, I actually do have more respect for the POV of no RPS (as long as it's that individual's opinion and they don't try to stop me liking it), whether the characters are alive now or were alive in the past, than I do of the (usually) "It's okay if they're fifty years dead, there's no one around to complain or sue."

Aside from the fact that if it's that recent there are bound to be children or grandchildren who just might be a little upset (and in fact, one of the Hornblower archives is now hidden because of descendants finding the non-slashy part about the real Captain Pellew and he was around a bit more than fifty years ago), it just strikes me as hypocritical.

Sigh.

Yeah, exactly. Because "RPS squicks me" is an opinion, a personal line in the sand. Even "RPS squicks me, but historical RPS doesn't, for some reason" (or: "... and I think that's because blablabla") is really just a personal thing.

But then they start demanding that other people adhere to their squicks, to their personal definitions of respect. Or even worse, they say "Well, you're free to write what you want, of course, but I think it's disrespectful," which translates to "Aren't I a morally superior person for letting these creeps write publish their crap even though they are clearly morally detestable people because of what they write."

No, really. I'm no longer bothered by the demands that I stop publishing my RPS. Even the lies and misunderstandings and prejudice against RPS no longer piss me off. The only thing that still effing gets to me is the superiority complex shit they're pulling and god, I. am. so. f*cking tempted to post to FCA-L asking if they're having fun on the high road.

And yeah, there's that, too. Where exactly does the difference between "historical RPS" and "real RPS" lie? Who gets to determine that and why would she get to determine it for all of us.

You know what my first reaction to all this is?

I never say it, but I swear, one day, someone, somewhere will get me pissed off enough to say it.

We all have lines in the sand. I respect others', but I'd really like it if they would respect mine too, whether or not it's further than they are.

And the respect thing? Please, if we slashed people we didn't respect, I'd be writing Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson slash. I've got to be able to respect someone before I can find them attractive, and I've got to find them attractive before I can slash them (attractive, of course, does not necessarily mean pretty in this case. Of course it does sometimes).

I'm tempted to do something like that too, but I think I'll take a different route.

Some of the posters have said something like: I'd be offended if erotica were written about me, and I project that onto the people being written about.

I'm going to say something like: I would not be offended if erotica were written about me. I wouldn't care what was written about me as long as I was getting laid by someone reasonably presentable. I project that onto the people I write about.

Of course, a logical argument may ruin their nice little superiority thing.

See, that's just it. Someone on there said that we 're okay with turning people into puppets as long as we're no the ones being done that to, and um. Hello? Several people I know have been slashed. Ruth once imrov'ed a thingie about me (non-slash), etc. We don't care.

Exactly.

I would have no problem at all (no one's taken me up on it as of now) with being slashed or hetted one little bit.

I really do wonder if, deep down, that might possibly actually be what separates those who dislike RPS from those who like it. I'm sure it's not quite that simple, but I wonder if it might be the bottom line.

Bravo I totally agree with you on that. I think when people start quibbling about something like this, it's a sign of them grasping for whatever they can and exploiting any negative aspect that they can.

I'd rather join you in our little corner than be with them even for a minute. Bring on those pretty boys and the cosmic connections.

Exactly. I have no problem with people not liking it; they're entitled to their own opinions. But I hate people trying to push their morals around, in this or anything, it just drives me crazy.
