I like music. I like all sorts of music. For some reason it has to have vocals for me to be able to like it. Usually. I mean, I love Orion, and there's some dance music I like. So basically, while I'm more likely to like some kinds of music more than others, I don't think there's a single genre I don't like any song at all in. I'm a musical omnivore.

And you know, wether I like or don't like the music has no effect at all on wether I like or don't like the people behind it, or on my ability to slash them.

I like NSync. Their music, yes, but also themselves. I think Chris is a freak with a wonky sense of humour, JC is a spaz who writes cybersex songs, Joey is cuddly, Justin is funny and adorably young and puppie-ish and Lance is a southern belle flameboy. Sure, some of all that may be manufactured, but I really cannot believe all of it is. There has to have been something there to build on, yo. Plus, as Gui said, even the Beatles were manufactured to some extent. Hell, as I said in response, even Bob freaking Dylan's image is largely manufactured.

And frankly, if you're judging fanfic based purely on the fandom, if you're judging writers as people as as artists based on the fandom, then you're prejudiced, pure and simple.

GOD! yes, yes, yes, and YES. So clear, so simple, and so concise. I'm saving this line, I love it so much I wanna adopt it and give it a little room in my house :)

this is what I'm going to say from now on when I get shit for the boyband thing. Thank you!!!!

You're welcome.

I've just come out of a similar discussion on the Megadeth boards (my favourite discussion ground), you see, and I had plenty of time to hone my rage about this.

They're snobs. Few things piss me off as much as the My Fandom Is Better Than Yours attitude.

Yep...I also think it's Keeping Out The Riff Raff. The BNFs have their secret lists for it and the rest of us aren't allowed on and better not post it in public. I see control/elitism issues.

BNFs?

I think in some cases it's also a "Why are you wasting your talent when you could be using it to write wonderful stories in a fandom I like to read?" thing. Which is even worse.

Total insult...

People can be so stupid... Those comments come off as insults when people really mean them to be praise but they can't get past their own biases to admit they like your work for what it is.

It's also exatcly the same as "Why are you wasting your talent writing fanfic/scifi/fantasy/horror/romance/smut?" As long as one is writing, one isn't wasting one's talent.

Beatles

Reason magazine (http://www.reason.com/) had an article a while back about the beatles being manufactured and made the nice claim that while they were really good, they were not the best ever... the reason that their music is still remembered is that aging baby boomers keep wanting to put their past up front and on current culture... it's sort of an ego thing. If it wasn't for the baby boomers, the prominence of the Beatles would be much less...

You can judge how people view people based on how they portray people but the analysis needs to be much deeper than just "they portrayed them as gay" because 15 people could write some one gay and write the person as gay in 15 different ways with 15 different vitures and 15 different vices. The only real judgement call that can be made about the writer is based on style and grammar and spelling. Content is iffy because people can write content for a variety of ways. Some one who say, writes bible slash, can write it to explore their own religious views, to slam christianity, can write it to amuse themselves, can write it to plug their own faith, to belittle homosexuals, to be little homophobic people... and I bet the content might be very similar.

Erm, that probably makes no sense.
