So. The prison story. It's hugely ... bare. Sparse. I'm hardly getting any descriptions, just a lot of dialogue and a couple of image flashes. It's got a very black&white/sepia feeling. More than ever, I'm seeing this as a movie and not as a prose piece. It also changed to present tense in the second scene. And as even, more usual, it jumps in in medio res. This is the first scene, rewritten in the present tense:

"You're new here, aren't you?"

Jason looks up from his book. "Why?"

The other man ignores the uninviting tone and smiles at him. "I'm Lars Ulrich. Mind if I sit down?"

Jason shrugs. "It's a free prison."

Ulrich snickers as he takes the chair opposite Jason. "You're a funny man, Mr ...?"

"Newsted."

"Do you know who I am, Mr Newsted?"

"You just told me. You're Lars Ulrich."

"Do you know what I am?"

"Annoying?"

"I'm your gateway to anything you want inside this prison."

"What I want," Jason glares. "Is some fucking peace and quiet."

"Unfortunately, that's one of the very few things I don't deal in. That and freedom. But if you ever want anything else, just ask for Lars Ulrich. Everyone here knows who I am."

So what do you lot think? Does the present tense work? Should I flesh it out more? Anything?

I don't like these characters. Jason is passive, Lars is a callous bastard, James is a violent bastard, and Kirk's a leech. *frown* How can I like a story about characters I despise?

Found in one of the plethora of emails we get from people thinking we're a university:

<<I will visit British in the summer>>

That ... amused me. For some reason. Probably just because I'm still on my first cup of coffee.

Sith Warrior

Your savage and aggressive nature does you credit, my apprentice. And it will serve you well when you learn the ancient battle arts necessary to become a Sith warrior. There are weapons, powerful weapons, that I will teach you to use - not the least of which is your own formidable body. Your lessons will be harsh and painful. But you will use that pain. It will make you invincible. Not even the most accomplished Jedi Knight will be able to withstand your onslaught.

I have recently re-married, so my name and EMail address have changed. I am now Margaret HusbandsLastName, on M.Alderson@mdx.ac.uk. Please will you update your distribution lists. Many thanks, Margaret Margaret HusbandsLastName (previously LastName)
Aaargh! This is the 21st century, people! Women don't automatically take their husbands last name anymore. If you wanna do it, fine, but could you please not act like it's only natural, and all married women take their husband's last name?

Bitches.

I'm tired of people. Not all of them, just ... most. More than most.

I'm tired of the hipocrites, I'm tired of the bigots, I'm tired of the people telling me to 'suck it up', of people dismissing suicidal people as cowards, I'm tired of people playing more-miserable-than-thou, I'm tired of people lashing out because they're feeling bad, and most of all, I'm tired of the judging.

Humanity sucks. Fact of life. People judge others, all the time, and I've learned to live with that, because I had to in order to fucking survive in this godforsaken world. But that doesn't mean I like it, and sometimes it gets too much. Fuck this, I'm gonna listen to U2 being ditzy and drunk.
