WTF indeed. You'd think if he wanted to revive this, he'd at least change the name to something a little less Orwellian. ("We have always been at war with Iraq.")

He's probably not even literate enough to get the implications. :P

If that was on any other domain, I would have assumed it was satire.

I'm still trying to convince the other half opf my brain that it's not, really. I just. Bzuh? Loyalty Day? Like, for serious? Georgie, 1984 was not a how-to book, son. o_O

Ah, not as bad as it first appears. Wikipedia provides context: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty_Day

This dates back to the '50s.

Well, you know, can't have those filthy commies do anything without shoving an American flag down their throats.

I think we should overthrow our oppressors and take over Calder House tomorrow.

You know, my mum was telling me the other day that I should form a union and go on strike ...

People have been sacked at our employer for trying that. You'd need to do it all on your own time, outside of company premises, not using any company resources (no posters or email).

On the other hand, if you can get half the people in the building to join a union, they have no choice but to recognise it.

I really don't want to work for our employer for any serious length of time. Even Widows had unions - they recognised that it keeps them honest. The only reason to oppose unionisation is if the employer plans to not be honest.

Yeah, I'm applying for new jobs here and there myself. I mean, I can join an existing union, but they really are very American in their attitudes towards unions especially. :/

I'm not applying for jobs yet - I want to stick tech for at least a year before I look for something better. But I'm not interested in building a career there (going down the supervisor -> manager road).

If I'm lucky, maybe this application development stuff will work out and I can go freelance for a while and do much of my work in my underwear. :oD

I....

Uh....

I'm gonna break Godwin's law if I continue this train of thought....

From: [identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com

Apparently, it dates back to the Fifties. I'm ... still WTFing over here.

From: [identity profile] count-to-seven.livejournal.com

Wow... how the eff are we supposed to "affirm our loyalty" if no one even knew about this to begin with?

I'm seriously glad no one seems to have known about it. Ugh.

From: [identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com

Not to mention, is anyone, in this day and age, going to head "Loyalty Day" and not think "Orwell"? For serious? Because ... no. And also, WTF.

From: [identity profile] count-to-seven.livejournal.com

You don't live in the suburban U.S. :/ You'd be amazed what I see on a daily basis.

From: [identity profile] pixisity.livejournal.com

This pretty much says it all.

Thank God I am not American.

From: [identity profile] ladydouji.livejournal.com

I suppose it says a lot that I've live in America my entire life and this is the first I've heard of "Loyalty Day" Maybe just that Americans don't care about holidays unless they get a day off or there's gifts or goodies involved.

From: [identity profile] sonatine.livejournal.com

*sigh* I guess it's the wholesome American equivalent of May Day, which is commie free and involves God and apple pie?

All this after I've watched "V for Vendetta" again yesterday...
