So my dad bought me the printer/scanner thing I asked for, and now I need some moral advice. I'd asked for this as a combination birthday/Christmas/ew Year's present, because of the cost, but in his e-mail he only mentions my birthday, and says it'll be delivered somewhere between tomorrow and Friday. I'm usually very concientious about not opening Christmas presents until Christmas Eve, but not so much for birthday presents, and also, I could really use this already. So, do I presume it's a birthday present, and open it early? Do I wait until I'm back from Belgium to open it? Do I wait until my birthday? Help?

I'm running a bit late this year in putting my Christmas tree up, largely because I broke the foot of mine somewhere in the last eleven months, and I can't seem to find a new one for a reasonable price. So this afternoon, we go to Pound Savers and get a tree, and put it up, and we go get an advent calendar, and, er, stuff. (Can you tell it's Patch Day? Heh.)

And Christmas cards! I need to start writing Christmas cards! I'm sure if bring them to work i'll get them all done in no time!

The pragmatist in me suggests using it now since you have use for it. The realist in me wants to know how long you can go with the shiny new printer/scanner in your flat waiting to be broken in. The sentimentalist in me suggests waiting until at least your birthday. Do you have any idea what your Dad's preference on using it would be?

The realist in you is evil. And I'll have you know that when it comes to Christmas presents, I've held out for a whole month at times, and shlepped them over to Belgium to open on Christmas Eve proper with the rest of my presents. :p

My dad ... doesnae really care either way, which isn't helping things.

Honestly, if you could really use it, I'd lean towards using it and telling your dad what a huge help it is already whenever you feel appropriate doing so (by which I mean, you know, if you're concerned about it, wait 'til your birthday and say so, or whathaveyou). Mentioning it on the phone or whatever, making it clear that it's awesome and you deeply appreciate the gesture (because, obviously, both are true).

I can be pretty pragmatic when I think it's reasonable. ;)

I dunno that I'd call it "really use," I just want to scan in doodles and stuff. Though now that I think of this, I kinda should open it as soon as I get it in case there's something wrong/missing. (Ha! Rationalisations FTW! :D )

Well, that's what you get when you give one the impression it might be work-related or something. ;)

Honestly, though, that's a good idea. I don't remember the last time someone gave me a tech gift, so I didn't even think of that.

Ah, but I'd love to borrow said printer to use to print off the labels for my Christmas Cards... and I bet you could use it for that, too! Thus, *obviously* you need it before your birthday, or your Christmas Cards will be late, thus damning you for all eternity as a "bad friend".

With such presents it's best to try them out at once. In case something should be wonky with it. :)

we go to Pound Savers and get a tree

OMG, watch out for bats!!! O.O
