So. After many headaches, I'm coming to the internet for help. All I want is to be able to play World of Warcraft on the US servers. I've done some googling and found instructions on how to change the realmslist file to make it logon to the US servers, I've uninstalled and reinstalled, and I have a US account, and still it keeps not letting me log in and giving me a "cannot validate" error.

Please help me, internets, you're my only hope. Please feel free to point people this way if you think they might be of help. I know it's possible, but Blizzard say it's not supposed to be possible so I can;t ask them for help. And I'm about to go insane over here.

[ETA] Well, rawumber managed to log on with my US account just fine, so the account is not the problem (which would've been preferable, as then I could've asked Blizzard for help, sigh). I'm currently downloading the US client, and will uninstall/reinstall tomorrow, download the patch from the website rather than through the updater, and try again. Any other suggestions still welcome. [/ETA]

I don't know the solution as I've not encountered the idea before, but I can post on the worldofwarcraft and wow_ladies comms and see if there's someone who does. I'll ask my guild, too.

Somehow I've managed to be part of that comm for a week without noticing it doesn't have open membership. Clearly I'm a genius. I should manage with the main comm, though.

You have to buy an American version of the game to play on the US servers, yo. Even with the file editing, which you still have to do.

Or actually that might just be for the CD-key to get a US account, which you say you have. Then, I don't know. I'm sorry. :(
Should edit file, then download the update from worldofwarcraft.com instead of using the auto updater.

But yeah, you can download WoW patches off of fileplanet.com, that I know of, and should be a link to the patch from the main site as well.

According to everything I've found through google, though, says that as long as you have a US account (which I do) and edit the file, you should be fine. I might try downloading the US client, though, and see if that works.

A friend of mine has a European WoW, but using my US account, he manages to log on to the US servers.

Go to your WoW folder, open "realmlist.wtf" with Notepad.

"set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com"

If that doesn't work, then I have no idea what can.

Yup, did that, have a US account--or at least it should be one. I suspect the problem may well be with the account, now that I think of it, and I'm going to get one of my US friends to check if they can log in to the US servers using it to see if it is. Thanks for the help anyway!

Yep, created it there, claimed I lived in the states and everything, US 10 day trial, definitely showing up as US account on the website, but not letting me log in in the game. The first account I tried, it did let me log in to the EU servers with the "US" account, but I did say I lived in the UK for that one. This one, I don't wanna risk trying in case that'll fuck it up. :/

Sadly, according to their website I shouldn't be able to do this, so I dunno if they'll help, but if my friend also can't login, it's definitely an account issue, and I'll call/e-mail US support (or ask my friend to contact them).

That usually means your patch is wrong/off. Have there been any US hotfixes this week?

That might be it--it downloaded the UK patch automatically the second time I installed it as well, but that's probably because it's a UK version, and it's not letting me login even the first time, before (I think) the patch is installed, but I'm installing the US client, will manually apply the US patch(es), and see if that works.

Maybe it's the other way around? I know there was a Euro only mini patch this week connected to the Spanish realms, so maybe that's the problem?

If we've hotfixed in the US and the UK hasn't yet, you get screwed. I was in the UK when...1.10 or 1.11 I think it was, came out. One of the big patches. WELL - they decided not to patch the UK one for an extra WEEK. No WoW for me.

Is the file extension for that file /really/ 'wtf'? That's hilarious. :o)

"WoW Text File". You'd find that there is indeed a "WTF" folder in your main directory too. In fact, in their FAQ there is an entry for "Why is there a folder called WTF? Isn't that inappropiate?"

All these replies are missing something that happened this week, on the 10th I believe.

I am in the reverse boat to you - I play on EU with a USA copy. This week the EU install was updated, with a tiny patch and the USA *wasn't* because the EU fix only applied to the spanish install. This hardly ever happens, as patches are normally rolled out across all countries.

What I had to do was get a mate with a real EU copy, that had the patch applied and they sent me the wow.exe file, which I replaced my USA wow.exe with. Then it worked fine.

I'm not sure, but if you have the EU copy, and it's updated already, you need the "old" wow.exe (1.12.1) from a USA install.

(note that, as well as this, you still have to change the realmlist.wtf file and you do need a WoW USA account).

A-HA! Thank you, oh kind anonymouse. :) I've downloaded the US version and will be careful about patching it with US patches only, but I'll try this if it doesn't work. (I do indeed have a EU version of the game, and it keeps patching with the UK patch.)
