I need some help from the more tech-savvy people on my friendslist. *pleading look* My ipod is toast, and has been for a while, and I'm fed up with not having portable music. So I need to replace the hard drive. Most of that shouldn't be a problem; I opened the ipod yesterday, unplugged and replugged the HD in the hopes of fixing something, and it didn't get fixed, but I didn't screw anything up, either.

The problem is that I don't know how to select a new HD. Scan has a couple of Toshiba notebook HDs, some quite cheap, but I've no idea if any (all?) of them would work with the iPod. The HD that's in it now is a Toshiba MK2004GAL, though according to this article, a MK2006GAL works equally well. The HDs at Scan all have the ATA interface, if that matters at all.

Help? *pleading look*

I overslept this morning, so while I made it to work in time, I couldn't go get the transformer for my scanner. Arse. They'd better not send it back to the sender after one week excactly, like they say on the card, because they're only open between 07:00 and 13:00, and any time I call the number on the card to arrange redelivery or have it held at my local post office, I get a "Sorry, this voicemail box is full, try again" message. I should have just had it sent to work, but I wasn't sure if it'd get here before my leave, and argh.

It all depends on the thickness - you could try looking up the specs for that model of drive and comparing them to the specs for the one in the iPod. If they're the same physical size, it should work.

Some fishing around other places might turn up something - or you could try eBay for a replacement iPod.

Poking about on Froogle has revealed I can get a new HD for around £65, so I'll probably go with that one, I think. :)
