My iPod is having fits at me, augh! *shakes it* Pretend all you want that you no longer have any songs on your hard drive, bu at least connect to my computer so I can re-upload, then, damn you!

I'm also not getting LJ comments again, or getting them way late. This is vexing me muchly. *shakes LJ like a baby* GIMME!

(So apparently I called [livejournal.com profile] krazycat on New Year's Eve. I have no memory of this whatsoever. Er. *blinks owlishly*)

In order to give us some busywork, we're supposed to, between calls, read this ... something about computers. I can't remember the exact title of the book this stuff is from, but it's frankly hilarious. It's supposed to be a bunch of training modules on IT skills, but it assumes a level of basic knowledge that is, basically, non-existant. Granted, I've been using the computer for thirteen-odd years now, so my level of IT knowledge is probably higher than most, but considering that we're all of us using computers on a daily basis, at work if not at home, I think we can assume we all know what a mouse is, right?

The only reason I managed to get through the whole first module is that the whole thing is also so out of date it's hilarious. The book was supposedly written in 2001 and updated in 2002, which would be old enough, in this field, but I seriously was guessing late nineties at the latest. I mean, it mentions WordPerfect, people. And light pens (but not drawing pads!), and 800x600 monitors as the highest definition ones, and dot matrix printers, and HDs measured in MB, and that the 3.5" floppy has "become the norm", and the Y2K bug and the iloveyou virus (was that as long ago asay 2000? huh.) and we won't even go into the internet section, where 56KBaud is still "the maximum speed of the public telephone network" and I seem to have scribbled in the margin something about "What is this broadband of which you speak?"

Oh, and this:

Even the smallest office has now come to rely on computers. However, in some situations, person skills cannot be replaced.

I mean, what? Did the author feel like they had to reassure us of that or something? I seriously sat herefor five minutes WTFing over that line.

Oh, god, Module 2 begins with an in-detail introduction to ... Windows 95. And how to use the mouse, what the various parts of a window are, and how to play Solitaire. I'm sorry, I'm refusing to continue with this travesty. I'll find my own busywork, thanks.

Does iTunes not recognise the iPod? Or if it does, is there a padlock on the lower portion of the screen? And does it say the iPod has X GB but you can't access any of the songs?

If so, use the iPod updater (the latest version) to restore your iPod. It will wipe the iPod memory, but you can reload your songs.

The iPod sort of froze up a few days ago while I was listening to it, and when I rebooted it (holding down play+menu) it showed the dreaded exclamation mark folder. Ever since then it's either done that or let me get to the menus and stuff but claims it has no songs on it. The computer won't recognise it at all, either in iTunes or as a dish drive. :/

I'll try that updater thing when I'm home, thanks! I don't mind re-uploading everything, as long as I don't have to send my Samwise away. :D

(Also, hi, you're new to my flist, aren't you>?)

Relatively new, yes.

My iPod did the same: said it was 37GB full but I couldn't play anything, as all of the playlists appeared to be empty. iTunes didn't recognise it either. I had to wait until I got an iBook to try the updater thing, as my Mac didn't want to play nice. I hope your PC / Mac does. It's an expensive paperweight otherwise.

Yes, it would be!*prays to computer gods that Legolas will decide to be nice for a change*

Welcome! :D

if it helps, I rang lj. which I am quite impressed by, considering my state. Also, I'm sorry I missed you when you went. I may have been dead to the world by that point.

I saw that! :D And no worries, I only vaguely remember getting home in the first place, let alone the leaving part, so. :D

That book is a joke, right, they're just messing with your heads? Or..?

Hehe.

My old boss still thinks Win95 is great and has no intention of upgrading, like ever. :\
