So I actually had an entry done at work today, but since since the network at work is down and is looking like it's gonna stay down for a while (someone stole, depending on the gossip, either the routers or the servers themselves) and my computer isn't recognising my USB flash disk here at home (Melle SMASH!), this is is. Feh.

I'm ... not having a day, let me put it that way. Got a bit of writing done at work, then I over-napped once I got home, and now I'm grumpy and still tired. Grmpf. I dis, however, get a lovely 50g ball of the most scrumptious yarn (80% alpalca, 20% silk) from a co-worker/fellow knitter as a reward for finding her more of the yarn that she needed another ball of to finish a jumper she'd been working on for three years. PH34R my google-fu! Also, mmmmmsoft!

Wow, if they managed to make off with the servers I'd love to know how. Those things are *huge* and heavy. Router'd probably be the easiest out of the two.

I really hope it's the routers they nicked and not the servers, and not just because the routers will be easier to replace so they can get the network back up sooner, but also because those servers? Contained a lot of customer data. Which means that if they did make off with the servers, they must've been after the data, not the hardware. And also, that if they can't recover the data, and even if they can, this could end up costing them a whooooole lotta money.

Recovering should be easy - they should have backups outside of the facility, as well as onsite backups (I hope they do for their own sakes!) but yeah, the PR would not be good if it was the servers.

I'd love to know how they got them out. It's not like you can stuff a server down your pants or something.

No kidding! I'm doubting the server thing, because my supervisor says it's the routers, which makes more sense. Either way, though, it was their own fault for putting the servers in a room with a) windows (which can be and were indeed smashed) which are b) in a corner that's a dead corner for the security cams. And did I mention there's no proximity alarms? Yeah.

The co-worker who claimed it was the servers that got stolen also said they couldn't do backups because it's customer data (something to do with the Data Protection Act?) so they might not be able to restore. Again, though, I have my doubts.

Been awhile since I had to look at the DPA but I'm pretty sure you can back customer data up. No one sane would run anything important like that on a computer system without backing up. Plus, you're meant to keep the backups secured.

Oh, man - windows and no cams? WTF! That is amazingly stupid. Our servers at uni are buried in the basesment level and have doors like fort knox!

If you're curious (or can't sleep...) the act is here: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1998/19980029.htm

I think I'm becoming immune to the sleep inducing properties of Acts now. I'll see what I can dig in the way of actual sections but I'm still pretty sure you can tell your co-worker that they're talking out of their arses.

Oooh, alpaca. There were a few of those at the farm, they were the cuddliest things ever!

It is the softest thing EVAR! I want to knit a bra from it because, SO SOFT! Mmmmm.

From: [identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com

I don't know if I would, though, because I'd be constantly turned on by the soft. :D

Heh. That's not really a problem, per se, you'd just have to wear them at home. Alone or with company. *g*

Heeee! Point! Maybe what I'll do is get another couple of balls and knit a sleeveless jumper or something.
