You're both FREAKS. [If I had space, I might pile down a room full of obselete hardware with the insistence that in the event of WWIII I would be able to create my own web server and/or giant robot, but having four rooms and two closets, the idea of having stuff that would likely just sit there and not be useful bothers me.]

Yeah, space is one of the problems, and also the fact that I don't have the time or energy to make it into a file server. But I'm STILL tempted!

What model is it? If it's anything that'll run Mac OS X you should jump on it. :o)

I just looked it up, and those were actually quite nice machines at the time (at least compared to the abomination that was the 6200 I was using back then). However, it won't run Mac OS X and unless you're used to working with it, Mac OS 9 would be a pain in the arse. You could, though, install Linux on it quite nicely and use it as a server. It has SCSI support, and PCI slots so you could add USB or FireWire. No built-in networking, though.

If you do go for it, I have software and experience with that era of Mac - my first Mac was the 6200.

Yeah, I didn't think it looked ready to be used as a proper computer. And nice as it would be to get a file server set up, I have neither the time, space nor energy for it at the moment. :/

Not that I'm not still tempted, mind.

Well, it would still be usable, with the right software. Nisus Writer for word processing, and maybe Photoshop 6 for graphics work (which would go just fine, but you'd need patience).

The question is: will it do anything that your current computer can't?
