It worked, and without restarting, too!

(Now, at some point this week I'll need your help trying to decide on which iBook I want, and on how to buy it and to hold my hand as I worry about whether I'll get the credit or not. And then you'll get to have the pleasure of walking me through setting up the PoS as a file server. :D)

You really should go over to the Apple centre on Nicholson Street. We were in there on Monday and they have both iBooks, right there. You can play with them and stuff. They actually do interest-free credit on all their machines, so maybe you could ask about G5 iMacs (or see if you can beat them down to a cheap price on an old G4 iMac - they'll have stock of those to shift).

By 'file server', do you just mean 'local file server', or also web/email server, like I've got Dome set up to be? Because that could be fun to set up. You could point a femgeeks subdomain at it (edinburgh.femgeeks.net, maybe?). If it's just for file storage, that'll be simpler - just a basic Linux install with SAMBA (it's easiest to use Windows filesharing), and lock everything else down for security.

And I really do want a laptop, for a variety of reasons ranging from the practical (I will be doing a lot more travelling now than I ever did before) to the whimsical (eeeeelaptop!). I'm thinking, iBook with lowest-spec RAM and then buy cheaper extra ram from that website you mentioned.

The second. I'd like to be able to get at my files there if I'm at my parents, and share things like mp3s with people. Also, I'd be able to offer some of my vidder friends webspace and (most importantly) bandwidth. (I'd offer femgeeks space, but after the Great Bandwidth Spike of 2001, I'm somewhat paranoid there. <g>)

Each new virtual host just requires a few lines in the httpd config file, and you can get separate logging and access control, and even bandwidth limits for each subdomain.
