This got to be the strangest e-mail I've ever received:

From: <crackpot>
Sent: 22 July 2004 14:49
To: <english CS @ large software company>
Subject: phone bill

i would like a refund of £20.03 which has been added to my
phone bill for a call to 09096-<snip>.this was for a product
that has not been wanted or used

Yeah. And I'd like a pony. Anyone else want to ask for something, since apparently we're now Santa Claus--with psychic powers, even, because we're supposed to figure out what exactly he wants and why and where to send this hypothetical money.

I guess if he really expected to get the money back, he would have left his Address.

I had a joke like this running out of hand today. We're supposed to guard quality at the job place, and I found some 1600 patches in a software product last night that they had told me was to be released to factory today.

So kind of as a joke, in half Eminem style, I wrote an email along the lines of "Either change the code, or it's not coming out". Adding that they had 17 hours to get the job done (curiously adding nights too).

Four suppliers have since sent new code either still last night or during the course of today, when all I wanted was for some boss to say: Ok, we're not going to release this. Which they did, but some guys took me seriously and made a late night release just the same.

I'm glad I have a whole week of holiday, but if those people find out they made a release for nothing... Doh, let's not think about it for at least a week.
