On HP fic: You know what I'd like to see explored more in HP fic? The WW2 parallels. Specifically, post-war. And not just Draco and other former Death Eathers/children of Death Eaters/Slytherins being shunned, which does happen in a lot of post-war HP fic, but the rest, The subtleties. The backlash against collaborators, proven or alledged, shaving the heads of girls who were dubbed (again, proven or alledged) "nazi whores", the scars of betrayal and hatred and paranoia that take several generations to heal.

Or maybe I'm alone in that because I've read so many books and stories and articles about the aftereffects of the collaboration sa a pre-teen.

On slash, then and now: I seem to remember a lot more first time stories focussing on "OMG does this mean I'm GAY?" during my first few years in slash fandom than I see now. It may be that they're still around as much as they used to be, just not in the stories I read these days, or in the fandoms I'm in, though.

And on the one hand, I think that's a good thing, because as someone once said in on a rant page, "If Mulder is fucking Kryceck, then his first concern is going to be not so much that he's fucking a guy and does that make him gay, but that he's fucking the guy who killed his father."

On the other hand, I never read much M/K, but I do read Harry/Draco, and in that case, I think the "Am I gay?" issue should come into play, because we're talking about teenagers, here. I don't necessarily want it to become the focus of the story, but I'm a wee bit tired of all the stories in which it apparently isn't an issue at all.

(She says, never having written this issue into her stories herself. But then, I feel as if I don't have enough "feeling" for the issue, having had nothing but positive experiences when coming out. Come to think of it, perhaps that's why the majority of HP (slash) fandom doesn't address this issue either. Hrm.)

On pairings: Okay, seriously, why is there not more Ron/Harry? No, really. I'm not a best-friends slasher in general, as you'll probably know, but I like some nice Ron/Harry every now and then, and more importantly, I want to know why there are so many people writing fluffy!H/D that is completely OOC when if they want fluff, they could be writing R/H, where their stories would still not be exactly IC, but at least less glaringly OOC than in H/D.

ETA: On Draco and redemption: I amnot a Draco Redemptionista. I don't want Draco to be redeemed. I don't expect Draco to be redeemed. Because I don't think Draco has done anything to be redeemed for. I think he's an annoying little twerp who's spent his whole life echoing Daddy's opinions and ideals and dreams, but he isn't evil. I still think, looking at HP as its own universe, that nothing is yet decided re: Draco, that he could still go either way. Keeping in mind that HP is a series of books, and we only have two of them left for Draco to become more than Lucius, Jr, my hope that he will become more than that (on either "side", Harry's or Voldemort) is dwindling, but still.

Ooooh, yes, on the WW2 thing.

And YES YES YES on the Ron/Harry thing. Why, oh, why, is there so little of it? It's almost canonical, dude! (Or, at least, you can make a case for it as canonical, in GoF, certainly.)

Dude, every time I read that scene in GoF, it makes me a Ron/Harry 'shipper for a few moments. And you know, when I want fluff, which I sometimes do, I go looking for Ron/Hermione or Ron/Harry. I don't go looking for Harry/Draco fluff, because whoooboy, nothing worsens a bad, "I need fluff!" mood more than fluffy H/D.

And *pokes* you write about the WW thing! :D

I've heard that a reason people don't seem to deal with the "am I gay" issue in fanfic is that it cheers them to imagine a world where everyone can be gay without having to justify it to themselves.

From: [identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com

I dunno, I mean, it makes sense, and I've heard that as well, but ... Well, how do people reconsile that with all the terrible angstfic out there? And especially in the HP universe, there's a possibility to just say that it's not illegal or shunned, just kinda weird, and yet people don't.

I should've made this clearer in my entry, but it's less the lack of "coming out stories" and more that no one ever seems to acknowledge that if you fall for someone of the same sex, you just might be a wee bit queer.

*waves* Hey there! I thought you had left LJ land for good. I re-added you, if you don't mind. :)

I totally agree on Draco's "redemption", by the way. I think particularly book five made obvious that he's not evil. Not yet anyway. In fact, he's as innocent as they come. He couldn't see the Thestrals in Hagrid's lesson, so he has in fact never seen death. He's got a big mouth and is quick to threaten Harry with death upon his father's improsonment, but he doesn't know death, and it's quite possible that when he encounters it, in whatever way, he's going to be repulsed.

I think at the moment he's just a rich spoilt brat who revels in his family's power and has adopted his father's views that 'mudbloods' have to be eliminated. But neither does he have a serious idea where this power derives from, nor does he know what such an elimination means. Maybe he'll be unfazed when he finds out. But as of yet, that's speculation.

Course I don't mind, silly. And yeah, I've done some wandering around, but I'm back now. Semi-new LJ and all. ^_^

And word on Draco. This is what annoys me about both the Draco Rememptionistas and the "He's Eval-with-capital-E and predestined to become a Death Eater" contingent. He's FIFTEEN! He's an ass, yes, but he's not done anything that would need "redemption", and even though he'll likely always remain an ass, that's still not the same as being "evil"!

Just imagine that every single bully and asshole at high school is on their way to become an evil overlord.... my hometown would be a worse place than the hellmouth!

From: [identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com

Hee! but yeah, exactly. I mean, I've known Draco. I've been a "victim" of Draco. Hell, I haven at times, almost been Draco myself. I mean, the kid is fifteen. Granted, it's a book, and there are only two more books left, so in this case, the decision will probably be made either way before he's eighteen, but still. Don't judge people before they're even out of school, people!
