So somebody on the HP4GU list asked bout fanfic, and why we [don't] read/write it. I filed in in the 'to answer if am bored' folder and moved on. Today, I read a reply from this guy that's just completely dissing all fanfic as having 'wrong' charatcer interpretaions and those of us who read it were gonna get a 'tainted' view of the characters that JKR never intended, and it pissed. me. off.

One: A lot of the best fanficcers are on that list. Does this guy assume that when they start writing, their well-backed-up version of the characters is suddenly going to vanish and leave them with nothing but ghosts of 'the real thing'?
Two: He claimed the 'real' characters are stereotypes. Is this guy even reading the same books as the rest of us?
Three: There is no 'real' interpretation of the characters. Nobody's ever gonna really see Harry & Co the way JKR sees them, and that's the beauty of writing.
Four: some of us are quite capable of distinguishing between canon and fanon, y'know.

Bastard.

Also, why are all these people so desperate for comments/feedback on their stories? Why do they want to see the hits on ff.net restored so they can see exactly how many people have [supposedly] read their story? I don't get it. There's a select group of people whose opinion I really want on my stories, because I know they'll have honest, profound things to say, but frankly, I could care less if nobody else'd ever read my fics. Yeah, I still put them out there, and yeah, I do beam whenever people say they like my stuff, but it's not a necessity.

You are not your feedback!
