I um. May or may not have just hotly defended Lance to my coworker. Because I was saying how I'm glad he's making his dream come true, and how he's worked hard to get where he is and deserves to spend that money on himself, dammit. And he's going "Worked hard? Poncing about on a stage?" And I frown: "Excuse me, these guys work hard. They used to do two-three shows a day for ages." And he backed off. Hee.

Random thought on the money thing, you know, if he'd have just donated that money (I keep wanting to type "monkey"! Dammit, Jakob!) to the space program, no one would've thought twice about it. But because he gets to go with in return for it, he's being villified. Feh. People.

::eyes widen::

My stalker was named Steve.

Annoying boy who drove me crazy was named Steve.

You'd just added to my doubts about all Steves in general.

Tell me, do you know any Andrews?

Re:

No.

I do know a nice bloke named Steve, though. He's just annoying in the brother kind of way. :)

According to the msn article about this, part of lance's participation is tied up with participating in like a celebrity reality show (like survivor, kind of ) and the cameras would film his training, and all that. They also mentioned sponsors. I don't think Lance will have to pay much, if anything.

Re:

Oh, I didn't know that!

See, this is even better, because this means that if he hadn't participated, the money wouldn't be there in the first place.

Ha! :D

I think the whole damn thing is cool

and good for him for being able to live out a dream ... this is the age that Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimove wrote about and I don't see why someone in the public eye and favor can't go off and do this, both to raise consciousness to the general public as well as to live something that not many of us will be able to afford in teh here adn now.

Plus, one of teh newscasters last night said: "From *Nsync to *Nspace." I love that catch phrase.

Why should he be ridiculed? Because some teenyboppers can't move on with their lives? It's all about growing up, kids. And if he's got the ways and the means and the ability and the abcking AND the money to do it, then good for him! And since it seems it's going to be covered heavily by the media, many of us who have only dreamed and written about space travel, will get to live vicariously....

The space geek in me is hopping up and down and going "You bastard!" coz it's him and not me. But it's also kinda cool to see a "civilian", albeit a celebrity civilian going up into space. (Dennis? Tito doesn't count coz he's a gazillionaire and can get whatever he wants)

As for injecting money into the space program, I doubt it will do much. Considering that all the money is probably going to go towards the training, launch, etc. And call me cynical, but I don't think one of the teenies' heroes being shot up into space is going to do much for reviving interest in the space program.

Re: I think the whole damn thing is cool

It's not the teenyboppers who're ridiculing him, but the "Boybands are all talentless gits poncing about on a stage in front of teenage girls" crowd.

(And good god, can i sound any more British?)

Re:

Actually, what I've heard is that these buying-a-place things are at least half going towards the rest of the space program. I mean, they're not doing the launch especially for him, you know. The rocket would've gone up anyway. And will, apparently, without him.

see now,

just because I don't write about the boybands (they don't exactly float my boat in a slash way nor are their looks appealing to me, except maybe Kevin/BSB) doesn't mean I don't appreciate them. I got to hear *NSYNC way before they were released - because their records were to be distributed within BMG and they gave us an opportunity to listen to the tracks before release to see if we wanted to do a book on them. Both the marketing manager and I were like "They're gonna be a Hit!" I have never been wrong about a movie that we were going to novelize nor have I been wrong about a star we were going to do a book on, nor was I wrong here. We didn't do a book right away and THEN the rights are all screwed up so I couldn't sell the foreign rights to it (grrrr - could've made a mint - so what do they do - give me a bok on the BSB's before they were popular again which I couldn't sell for the amount that the agent wanted becuase they wouldn't wait for them to break again - twits).

I know some teenyboppers are upset cause they're afraid the band is gonna break up; but I also know Lance has got other things going on besides the band and he's launched other singing stars careers and he's gonna be the next Ron Howard to the music biz. But that's cause I'm connected [:>] to info that not everyone on the street knows either and sometimes I see 'em before they're coming.

Anyway - it gives people something to argue about. If there's anything I've learned is people need something to gripe about.
