NEW YORK (CNN) -- An American Airlines jet crashed Monday on takeoff from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The plane went down in the Rockways section of the New York City borough of Queens.

CNN confirmed the plane was American Airlines Flight 587 from New York to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The plane was a Boeing Airbus A300. American Airlines did not immediately release the number of passengers on the flight. The A300 can accommodate up to 266 passengers, according to Boeing's Web site

At least four houses were on fire, and a huge plume of smoke could be seen rising from the site.

All three New York City-area airports -- Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark -- closed after the crash. Mayor Rudy Giuliani declared a Level One emergency, mobilizing all available police, fire and emergency personnel.

So, small plane, and according to [livejournal.com profile] zero3kid, who's watching the news, there's no indication that it's a terrorist attack. I'm still somewhat weary since it's the first working day after the 2-month anniversary (as well as Rememberance Day), but um. Breathing again.

According to the AP, it crashed moments after take-off, which, as awful as it is to say, is somewhat comforting, because that's a lot more indicative of some sort of mechanical failure than any sort of terrorist activity.

I live in NY and I'm also starting to breath again. I know alot of people died, but I'm happy that it seems to not be a terrorist attack. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

Sad, but...

There's a part of my brain going, 'oh, it's just a mechanically caused crash. that's okay, then.' The rest of me then kicks myself for sounding like a callous bitch.

God, I miss the days when plane crashes from mechanical failure were horrible, and tragic, and the worst thing anyone could imagine.

Man, I'm like, three hours from NYC. So every time something down there happens I get all jumpy and shit. As if something would happen to little old Keene, New Hampshire, right? I don't know. Maybe something could happen. It's a college campus. Although, if they were going to go for a college campus in New Hampshire they'd go for Dartmouth. *sigh*

Me no likie.

an Airbus 300

really isn't a small plane. I've been on 'em hundreds of times going overseas and cross-country.

Also, TWA flight 800 crashed minutes after take-off as well, and there still is, to this day, no real full explanation of what happened. I have my suspicions, these days, and since no one came forward right away to claim the WTC 9/11 tragedy, I would bet that TWA 800 was also a terorist attack. No one came forward for that either -- and the previous WTC attack too.

The other thing is the name 'American Airlines'; by attackign American Airlines, they're attacking America ... it's one of the reasons pilots and other flying personnel on American airlines go thru more rigorous training than any other airline (I know this from some peple I know who work for the airline)and it's one of the reasons I never flew American until my company did a contract with them for a 35% discount.

Anyway - this all sucks big time.
