How many of you do live "near" (for USAian values of "near") NYC, anyway?

I'm on the east coast... less than a day's drive away from New York. Actually planning on taking a road trip up there in 2 or 3 years. Fun!

About 3 hours away from Manhattan. 221 miles to be precise.

I live in LA now

but only recently moved here. Prior to moving to LA I lived in or near NYC and worked in NYC all my life. I have a lot of contact with NYC - friends and colleagues; I know my way around; know which neighborhoods are costly and not; where it's safe and not; etc.

I do, I do!

About, hmmm. Five hours by train, 35 minutes by air, 4 hours drive. Pretty close.

Re: :-)

See, this is what I mean by "USAian values" of near. You could cross my whole fucking country in 4 hours. :)

I live in New York city and my college is about five blocks away from "ground zero" and right across the street from city hall, a few blocks away from wall street

I still don't live there anymore...

...but I have to go back for biz trips 1 or 2x per year... I know it doesn't help but it would give us time to 'visit' if you wanted to.

Re:

Hm. How's the living space there? Cheap(ish)? Cause I already do an hour of commuting now, so as long as I'd be able to get home no matter how late I stay out (you Merkins have night trains and such, right?), I'd have no problem with that.

not so cheapish, really. and there are trains, but I think this far out, they stop at about midnight. and since the train stations are not always that convenient you'd need a car even with commuting via train. It's good for us, because the hubby works here, not in the city--we rarely have a need or reason to go in, actually. But for a single person who's actually having a *life*, this might not be the best choice ;)
