Remember that shooting I mentioned? Now the public TV channel's received a letter, accompanied by a bullet, congratulating the shooter and wishing for Rik Van Nieuwenhuyse^* to be the next victim. People, WTF is going on over there? o_O

^* Businessman who was in the news a lot last year for refusing to give in to threatening letters (also accompanied by bullets) demanding he fire an employee for wearing hijab.

Yeah. It's just ... for all that Americans seem to think Europe is this grand haven of whatever, we've got some massive right-wing problems over here as well. It's just that ours aren't in power (and in Belgium, aren't likely to get into power unless they get at least an absolute majority, thanks to the Cordon Sanitaire), though maybe that's why some of them pull shit like this.

For me, it's the fact that, because my mom is Dutch, I lived in the Netherlands for about 2.5 years. I've also visited frequently, seeing as I've got family over there.

That's my haven, my home. I live in the US because my loves do, and because the Netherlands has enough people already without me trying to move in and add to it.

But to hear that stuff like this is going on over there . . . It boggles the mind. I always saw the Benelux as being moderate, reasonable, and generally accepting. Hell, it was what I saw, on a daily basis, for the better part of 3 years.

It feels somewhat like coming home to find that someone has broken in, defecated on the floor, broken all your valuables, and killed your cats as they left.

Vlaams Belang is going to take the picture of a little girl from their advertisements. I wonder what/who they are going to replace it with.

I'd say they should be forced to print an empty white void, perhaps with a small print inside reading 'shot by Hans van Themse' or something.

Technically, Antwerp's not my home town, though my actual home town isn't all that much better in terms of VB votes, sigh.

I can't vote in local elections, though I can (and will) vote by post for the others.

New development: Another kid from the same school did the exact same thing showing up in Kortrijk. Same clothes, same style of gun, but the cops overpowered him before he could fire his first shot. Oh yeah, and he was apparently after his ex gf, not foreigners this time.
