bubosquared: (ramblin' mind)
Sofie 'Melle' Werkers ([personal profile] bubosquared) wrote2002-07-31 04:57 pm

(no subject)

So during the assertiveness course, we had to write down five accomplishments we were proud of, or skills we had. Mine:

1. I've always stood behind what I believe (and put my money where my mouth is), despite sometimes vicious opposition.
A reference, of course, to the decisions I've made in my slash "career", femgeeks, and stuff like that. Because I honestly cannot take credit for RareSlash or RS-X or femgeeks, or any of that shit, but I'm very, very proud of myself for never having age statements on rareSlash, for starting RS-X, for starting femgeeks, for standing up for my beliefs even when I was being equated with a stalker, a child molester, or the Antichrist.

I mean, at the time, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world, but looking back, I'm wondering if I was really young, really brave, really stupid, or any combination thereof. If I had to make that choice again today, I don't know if I'd do it again. I know now what the consequenses were, and I didn't back then, and that makes all the difference. Okay, no, I probably would do it all again, even knowing the consequenses. because that's just the way I am. Blame my dad.

2. I am a good writer.
This is the one I read out loud to the group. That took me a lot of guts. But I do think it's true. I have talent, and I have skills, and I have the will and the discipline to develop those skills. This is my one big talent, my one big skill. I'm good at this.

3. I have a good relationship with my brothers.
Technically maybe not really an accomplishment or a skill, but considering how many people seem to truly hate their siblings, while I absolutely adore mine, I think it deserves to be on here. My brothers and I get along great.

4. I taught myself English
I still feel like my English isn't all that good, a lot of the time, because I misuse expressions and words, and you lot can't hear this, but I mispronounce a lot of words, but all in all, considering the fact that I'm mostly self-taught, this is something I can be proud of.

5. I'm good at webdesign.
Well, moderately good. But I'm good enough for what I need, and that's all that matters.

And now, some quotes.

Melle: Sleep? What is this sleep of which you speak? *drops dead*
Katie: It's what happens when you faceplant into the keyboard.
(LJ comments)

If anyone ever catches me stumbling down a Dublin street after midnight, drunkenly singing the Monkees theme song, they have my permission to shoot me.

I swear, I dread going anywhere anytime soon. Because I was talking to Jared a minute ago and broke off mid-sentence to sing along with my head.

I know I promised a shmoop drabble, but none of you bitches have given me any yet, either! Dammit.

I've never heard you speak, no, but you write in English remarkably well, and that is impressive.

Thanks. *^_^*

A weird mix of The Cure and Brel, in head. Um.

Hahahaha! Um, yes, sorry, but hee. And to make this comment a little less pointless: hey! I share three of those with you! As in, two, and two halves.

Hum. It's all still completely pointless, isn't? Ah well.

Ooh, which ones?

And don't mock my crack, dammit!

4: I learned all of ten words in school, and all the rest on the Internet, reading fics and lurking on MLs. I think we really deserve to be proud of ourselves for that one; I know people who took English in school and who still need subtitles to understand a movie/show.

3: Because brothers rock, even when they're being annoying little shits. :)

halves of 1 & 5: I know a lot about webdesign, but I never use it. Same goes for standing behind what I believe: I just never had the opportunity to really do something about any of it, but I would if I could, and I never back down.

And hey! I'm not mocking. I'm just, y'know, quietly laughing. :p

4: Yes, we do deserve to be proud of ourselves for that! Although I must say, "Everything I know about English I learned from slash" makes for some interesting vocabulary ...

3: Yes, they do! ^_^

And yeah, I'm fully aware that opportunity has a lot to do with RS and RS-X and femgeeks. :)

Melle, I don't think your English is "good", I think it is exceptional. You express yourself so eloquently on political topics that I often forget that English isn't your first language. The fact that you are self-taught is remarkable!

*blush* Thank you.

You speak really good English. And your webdesign is way better than mine!

*blush* Thanks.

And while I am thinking of it, could you tell me some time how to set up my own 404 page instead of using the y-s one?

Re:

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2002-07-31 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Create a document called ".htaccess" (Just the extension, yes.)

In it, you write:

ErrorDocument 404 <full URL to error document>

Of course this works for other errors (403, etc.) as well. Keep in mind, though, that this actually redirects people to your error page. I know there's a way to make it so that people see your 404 while still having the wrong/missing URL in the address bar, but that's beyond me right now.

Dude, you speak better English than many native English speakers I know. The fact that you taught it to yourself is simply mindboggling. (I wish I could do the same with Spanish.)

Re:

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2002-08-01 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you're not flooded with Spanish day after day, the way we are with English, so there is that. :)

[identity profile] pelicanzed.livejournal.com 2002-08-06 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with everyone, your English is marvellous. (Unlike mine - I had to use Microsoft Word's dictionary to check how to spell "marvellous" - I thought it was "marvolous". I blame Tom.) The only word I've heard you mispronounce is "iron", which is said "eye-ern" not "eye-ron".

Thanks. :) Yeah, see, it's the little things like that that show I'm not a native speaker, and it bugs me a lot. ""

"Vinyl" is the other one.
