Managed to pack, clean and cook in an hour and a half. Wow. Go me.
Had an epiphany on the train home, but kat already said it best Because really, people, I'll be a lot more likely to shrug off, say, an anti-gay site when I stumble upon it that I would when it's been thrusted in my face and I've been ordered to read it, all while I was actually trying to have a nice dinner.
RPS has been "outed" before, in Q Magazine. That was a slight "eep", but then I didn't worry about it anymore. This? If it' true (big if, but still), it's scary as fuck.
Also, maladygirl has come up with the perfect name for the idiotic lotrippers:
lotwits

I read the email the girl wrote, and I think the issue is more of how she did it, rather than the fact that she did it. She seemed to be operating under the assumption of "oh, you're gay so you'll like stories written about male/male pairings" which is a hell of an assumption to make. I heard that Ian McKellen was told about the LOTR diaries that someone on LJ was doing (I never heard the follow up to that, though), so I assume he had a pretty good idea that some people are writing about the LOTR characters/actors with homosexual overtones.
But no, I don't think she was too smart about it...approaching him in the restaurant and acting so proud of herself that she had a slash website. I don't think it's going to be too big of a deal in the end, though, at least from a real-world context.
As for your early post about not making assumptions--I agree with that. I think it's cool when boys are very straight and are still all cuddly with each other. It's adorable. It also shows they're really secure with their sexualities and who they are. It does not mean they're doing anything else.
I think slash is fun but I can't imagine myself ever writing it. And considering all the dramas that I hear about going on within the fandoms, I think this is probably a good thing. I would not be able to handle it.

That's definitely my issue with it, yeah. As someone said on my friends list, you wouldn't go up to straight actors with RPHet, why would you go to gay actors with RPSlash?
I don't know if either this story or the VSD thing is true. I'm lening towards "no" myself.
And I really hope you're right and it's not gonna have much of an impact if it is true, because femgeeks is my baby, and I don't want to lose it.

Yeah, it's prolly best to stay out while you still can. Fandom politics, gen, hte, slash or non-fanfic, are hellish.

And a couple of years ago Entertainment Weekly had a big spread about fanfic in general, including RPS.
Re:
Sorry. It's just. The whole mindset that celebrities somehow owe us something is mindboggling to me. I've always said it's not my job to make the web safe and inoffensive for anyone, not even celebrities, but the "they're not special people" thing goes both ways, you know? They don't get any special consideration from me, but just as I'd not dream of disturbing a non-celeb's dinner, I'd never ever do that to a celeb.
Why is this so hard a concept to grab for so many people? Celebrities are human too. You don't own them!

Celebrities have a certain obligation to the public that's just part of their job. Just like, you know, dealing with cheating, lying undergrads is part of my job. I may not like it, but it's there. However, celebrities are only human and there is taking things too far. Like in this case.
Okay, rambling, probably not making much sense. Gonna stop now. *g*

Mind telling that to the undergrads though? ;)
