You know what? I don't care anymore. If pepole judge stories before they're even written, purely bsaed on the fandom and/or pairing, well fuck 'em. Whatever.

well, see. I have to gingerly disagree just a wee ickle bit. I definitely pick stories based on fandom and pairing. not because I think some things are of less worth than others, but because I am utterly uninterested in reading about some things. I'm not interested in bdsm, FuLa, TPM or mpreg. thus, I won't read them unless someone forces me, and then I usually just go, 'huh' and forget about them after. cause it's not my bag, like.

etc etc.

of course, being judgemental is perhaps an other thing entirely.

There's a difference between not being interested and saying that any story of that pairing will suck, no matter what.

But if someone's had all or mostly bad experiences with a particular pairing or fandom, isn't a certain amount of prejudice justified?

An analogy: I loathe celery. If I'd been the person to discover celery, I never would have determined it to be edible. I have never had a piece of celery I didn't hate. Am I obligated, then, to taste every piece of celery I come across, just to see if *this* is the one that will change my mind about it?

Hey, maybe there's a chef out there who can prepare celery in a way that won't make me spew. If I've never had a meal I didn't like made by that particular chef, maybe I'll give his/her Celery Surprise a shot. But until then, I reserve the right to assume I'm going to hate celery, and avoid it wherever possible.

Or should I just stay out of fan arguments when I've had less than seven hours of sleep?

To continue with your analogy, no one's saying you have to eat celery. You can eat or not eat whatever you want. But don't go about telling people that they shouldn't cook celery.

It's really hard to have a serious fandom discussion when your analogy is celery. Celery is just a funny food.

And don't assume that just because a chef choses to cook something with celery, it's automatically going to suck.

And yeah, it is. Not in the least because for some reason I remember once reading a story in which celery was involve in a sex scene.

Okay. I just figured since I was one of the participants in the exchange referred to in Ruth's "Fuck you" post, that I was included. Never mind, then...

I think what Ruth was referring to in her fuck you post was the implication that because most H/D is mushy and OOC, that means hers will be too, and that all H/D slashers are trying to "justify" Draco or whatever.

No, it's good that you cleared that up. I'm still not seeing where anybody said her story in particular was doomed to suck, though.

I think I have some weird genetic anomaly that makes celery taste really awful, like PTC-tasting only with some other chemical. Most people say it has no taste at all, but to me it's really bitter and nasty.

I like celery becasue it has a strong taste. I hardly smell anything, see, which impairs my ability to taste. So I like strong tastes like bitter coffee and really sweet chocolate milk and stuff.

But hey, most people don't think mlik hsa much taste and it's foul to me, so I know what you mean.

There's this chemical called PTC that some people can taste and some can't. The ability to taste it is a Mendelian trait, so we did little experiments with it in my Anthro class a couple semesters ago. They said that Brussels sprouts contain something similar, so PTC-tasters are more likely not to eat them, and thus avoid getting some other chemical that causes goiter. </useless factoid>

Oh, and does regular milk taste nasty to you, or just skim milk? Because I find skim completely undrinkable, but whole milk is yummy (and chock-full of fat, but oh well...)

All of it. I've tried regular, skimmed, half-n-half, everything. I like yoghurt, or chocolate milk, but normal milk is foul.

Go fig. :)

You know, when people decode exactly what it is that makes different foods palatable or not to different people, I bet there's going to be a goldmine to be had in diet aids. Imagine, you could just take a pill and suddenly high-fat, high-cholesterol foods wouldn't taste good anymore, and carrots would taste like sheer heaven.

Damn, Larry Ellison's right, I should have gone into biotech...
