Is a song a whore when it's been recorded by more people than I've had hot meals, or damed close?

I can't count on both hands and feet the number of people who have recorded that song. I have at least ten versions around here.

Pink sounds intriguing.

Though, for some reason, I have a thing about it being done by a guy. I expect it's the slash factor rearing it's head yet again.

My fave version is by Charley Pride (yes, the black country singer). It was written by Kris Kristofferson, most notable recently for, uhm, being in Planet Of The Apes and barely being noticed by me when Marky was on screen.
