I think of it as the equivalent of 1939 for modern cinema, because everyone says 1939 was a landmark year for the classics.
Aside from The Full Monty, there was also LA Confidential and a little movie by the name of Good Will Hunting. As well as a very interesting movie called As Good As It Gets.
A very good year. Though it's epic was no Gone With The Wind (The Ship Who Sank, as you most amusingly called it somewhere, though mundanes call it Titanic).
