I need a new hoover. By which I mean, I need a hoover, one that actually, you know, hoovers. Stupid piece of crap thatès probably older than I am mutter grumble I bet this carpet's actually, like, blue, rather than "dark". Grr.

Hmmm, if I can go by your description, that carpet may be beyond hoovering, my mother is notorious for renting a carpet cleaning device to give carpets a bath sort of speaking, when they are just the tiniest bit dirty.
A few companies rent them out, I'm sure that sort of civilized things have found their way to Scotland one way or another. It shouldn't be more expensive than renting a van to do your moving.
