Finally!

For Seana. She asked for Harry/Millie, and Harry sort of ran with this, but there you go.

great expectations

While he's little, living with the Dursleys, Harry never really thinks about the future. He supposes he'll finish school, get a job, a place of his own, probably visit his aunt and uncle on Sundays. He never dreams about getting away, because he doesn't know what "away" is. All Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia ever expect him to be is a failure.

For a while after he comes to Hogwarts, he just assumes what everyone else assumes: that he'll defeat Voldemort and be a hero and possibly marry some nice girl. Cho, perhaps, or maybe Ginny.

When he's sixteen, he decides he liked it better when no one expected anything of him. He no longer expects anything himself. He doesn't expect to actually defeat Voldemort, but he does. He doesn't expect to survive it, but he does.

He celebrates his fiftieth birthday by forbidding Draco to throw him a huge, decadent birthday party. Draco calls him a spoilsport and retaliates later that year by organising a big party on Christmas Eve, inviting everyone they know.

By the time they're ready for the main course, he's relaxed and reassured that Draco and Ron will not attack each other with the mashed potatoes -- although he's not sure they won't team up to attack anyone else; they seem to be getting along suspiciously well -- and makes a mental note to thank Draco for putting Oliver and Penny on opposite ends of the table.

After dessert, they retreat to the living room, and he is the last to leave, standing in the doorway and watching them, amazed and thankful he was here to see them.

"Boo!" He startles at the sudden sound of a voice from behind him. "Lost in thought, Potter?" Millie. Smiling at him, then looking over his shoulder into the living room, where Fred is being very loud, as usual.

"More or less." He looks at her. "You look great tonight, by the way."

"Thanks," she smiles."

"Did I ever tell you I used to have a crush on you?"

"Does Draco know about this?" Teasing, one eyebrow lifted.

"Back in our fifth year at Hogwarts. It started right after your first match on the team. You looked gorgeous, and you kicked ass, and for weeks, all I could concentrate on during Potions was how much I wanted to kiss you." He grins, a little sheepish, and feels the heat rising to his cheeks.

He's distracted for a moment by a particularly loud argument in the living room, and when he turns back to her, she's standing right beside him, grinning. "Next time you tell a girl about a crush you used to have on her, Mr Potter, you might want to pick a better location." She points upwards, and Harry realises without looking that they're standing under the mistletoe. He has less than a heartbeat to think "Oh. Whoops" before she kisses him, and he thinks he can hear Fred protest "Hey! My wife!" underneath everyone else's laughter.

And in return, I would like ... *thinks* Lee&Millie LN (future?) canon(ish) friendship. :)
