Hey, computer geeks, can anyone recommend me a good Wiki software package? Ideally, I'd like to be able do some minor layout-fidgeting (to make it fit in with the rest of my site layout), but that's not essential. I'm basically looking to use it as a dumping ground for plot bunnies, worldbuilding, and stuff like that--something that's a bit more organised than assorted LJ posts and/or handwritten notes.

[ETA] Never mind, went with MediaWiki in the end, which is decent-looking and pretty customisable as far as I can tell. Now to figure out how to customise is ...[/ETA]

Blah, they put me on a different break schedule, now I have to wait even longer for my first break. Booo!

I've successfully istalled (easy!) and used pmwiki myself. And then of cours dreamhost offers a one click install fo the big monster behind wikipedia and such, but i haven't made one of those yet.

Hm, I went with MediaWiki, which is the one used for the FW wiki, so now I'm just trying to customise the layout. I suspect one must be able to tinker with the php files enough to get close, anyway, right?

I suspect too, btu yeah, mediawiki is the FW + wikipedia one - it seems like a serious monster to me compared to pmwiki, is all *g*

I hope you wrangle it into the exact shape you want, and then you can become our local expert! woot. :D

Ahahaha! See, the problem with that is that you assume I'll be using a method other than "push buttons at random until it does what I want". <g>

MediaWiki is nice, but it's a bit on the heavy side. I used it for the ERIS wiki (which I never really put much content in), and didn't like it much.

Possibly the coolest wiki I've seen is TiddlyWiki: http://www.tiddlywiki.com/

It doesn't require any server-side scripting. It doesn't even require a webserver. It's written entirely in javascript and CSS. This means that you could stick it on a flash drive, and just carry it from computer to computer.

But I like server-side things. :D And I have an irrational dislike for javascript, for some reason, but that aside. I don't mind the heavyness--compared to some things, it's still quite light, and it's allowed to be a bit heavy with all the content I'm likely to put on it. :)

I think the main thing I like about TiddlyWiki is that the Javascript lets it be more application-like. There's no reloading pages, which really annoys me after a short while. (And is why I gave up trying to use a local wiki to keep track of what I was doing with our server.)
