Y'know, I love the Dark Tower cycle and all, but I'm beginning to remember why I usually only buy books in pocket edition. See, I do most of my reading on the train and the metro, and while walking home from the station in the evening, and let me tell you, Wizards and Glass, in paperback edition? Really, really fucking heavy and unwieldy, that is, and I swear to god, that thing could double as a handy blunt object with which to knock would-be muggers uncouncious. This would be a good thing, except mysteriously, I never get mugged. Hit on, yes, and burgled, but never mugged, so I don't need a weapon, I need a book I can handle!

I'm starting on Wolves of the Calla tomorrow. Which is a hardback.

Could somebody please come and try to mug me so I can at least get something good out of the volume of this book? Please?

I'm not volunteering.;-)

I use hardbacks for punching punaises into my bedroom wall (my wall is made of hard chalk and it's almost impossible to hang up posters) or crushing spiders.

Bah; coward. :p

WotC isn't actually all that heavy, but to lug around on the train and metro, not to mention the reading while walking home thing that apparently really confuses my coworkers, it starts to weigh after a while.

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading while walking home? Dude, don't you walk against telephone poles and stuff? I walk against everything even without reading in a book ( uitstekende mailboxes zijn een pest in de stad ).

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, no collisions with anything. It's a skill I've had since I was about ten or so. :)

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, you're so lucky. I can only avoid dog turds, not telephone poles or richtingsaanwijzers.

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not luck, it's years of practise. :D

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* It's the other way around for me really. The more I practice at reading or doing something else while I'm walking, the more I walk into things.

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-09 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
...or crushing spiders.

Yikes! That'll leave a nice spider-platter all over the wall... and the book.

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-09 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. But no spider!*g* I usually just use the vacuum cleaner or call for the cats, but if neither are avable, I'll just use a hardback I don't particurlarly like.

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-09 09:21 am (UTC)(link)

Glad to see you're at least selective about the book you'd use! *g*

Am I meant spider-splatter, of course, spider-platter would be... ugh.

LOL! I don't take just any book. ;)

LOL, I didn't even notice. spider-platter would be ... Indiana-Jones like? There was a scene in the second movie where they ate monkey brains and living snakes. *shudder*

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-09 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've never seen Indiana Jones, but somehow monkey brains and living snakes still sound better than spiders... sort of.

I do favour the vacuum-cleaner myself, or else the... er... vliegenvanger. *g*

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! But you must see Indiana Jones! It's even better than Star Wars, although it's not slashy. It's a very funny movie, especially when you haven't seen it yet. Perhaps for our next rendez-vouz chez Bubo's? (I have every the three movies)

De vliegenvanger? Ha! Goed idee. :-) Maar komen die pootjes van die spinnen dar niet van tussenuit? Of is het een ondoorzichtbare vliegenvanger? Ik wil alvast niet zien hoe een spin gesquished wordt.

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm going to have to object to being called Bubo, here. I am not my username! ;)

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*hehehehe* Oh, bubo. ;-) Sorry. ;-)

I was apprehensive about using Melle, because you said you went underground and everything. What if someone types up Melle and Livejournal into Yahoo and ends up on this page? *massive angst attack* ;-) It's okay if I call you Melle on Livejournal then?

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'm no longer underground, really, and I've never minded pepole just using my name. (It's complicated.) Cal me Melle, or Sofie, either's fine with me, really.

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Okido, then. :-) Easier to say Melle or Sofie than bubosquared.
I don't know if I ever told you my name. I'm not comfortable spreading my real name all over LJ, but if you look at my userinfo, my name is recognizable in the email address. It's an email adress from our broadband host. My dad used my name as an email address (would be pretty stupid to give him my online alias...) and I can't change it.

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always confused if I prefer people I know from slash fandom to call me Melle or Sofie, but I'l respond to either. I don't care about people knowing my real name, myself.

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I noticed that from your userinfo. :) The first time I ever saw anyone put their home-address and real name on their LJ-info.

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-10 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)

That would be fun!... if she'll have us again. *g* Maybe we could also watch The Others sometime. I'm sure we could borrow it somewhere at a video rent store (there's one not far from the station in Tongeren anyway...). :-)

Minder kans of bloed, afvallende pootjes, etc.

... mmm, tasty. :: shudder :: I'm actually very reluctant to use a book or a shoe on a spider -- too much direct contact!

Oh, that's good to know! Maybe I'll need to purchase myself a vliegenvanger.
En het is waar dat je het geluid hoort van een gesquishte spin. :-) Erg griezelig geluidje. Soms leven de spinnen nog als ik ze geplet heb met een boek. *brrr*

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You gotta hit 'em hard but briefly. And then do it again in case they're just knocked out. :-) And you don't have a vliegenvanger? What do you do to catch flies (please don't tell me you use a book... :: shudders ::)

... Thanks ever so much for that image. You're going to give me nightmares, woman. ;-D

[identity profile] bubosquared.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You people are both wusses, you know that? ;p

[identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oi! *glares*

's all my mother's fault. She passed her dislike of spiders on to me. She's the ebil mother. Well, at least I didn't take over her dislike of cats. Or dogs. Or horses. Or mice. Or... hey, just grant me the spiders, 'k?

Besides, there's a difference between fear and horror.

(Though I might just scream if you put a large spider on me.)

Apart from that. Yeah, I'm a wuss. I'm brave enough to admit it. *sniffs*

;-p

[identity profile] sileas.livejournal.com 2004-01-28 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, don't have a vliegenvanger. The cats like to eat flies. *g* The big cat is a very good fly-catcher. She eats spiders too from time to time.

*g* Happy Dreams! *giggles madly*
