Independent Soul: now with 75% more CMS! :D

I’ve made a CMS for my stories and one for the quotes, which will hopefully make it a bit easier to update those, at least, and a gallery so I can keep all of my photos and stuff together instead of trying to remember if I put a certain photo on my LJ gallery, my Flickr account, or my /random folder.

And, of course, happy birthday to me. :D

This is the time of year I usually get all thinky and stuff, and this year is no different. I’ve made a bunch of plans and resolutions for the coming year, and this time, I think I will actually keep them.

Resolutions, in order of how hard you’re all allowed to smack me if I fail.

  1. Get a new job by May. I’m setting myself a deadline because it’ll be the only way to stick to this.
  2. Get serious about freelancing as a webdesigner.
  3. Do not start smoking again.
  4. Crossdress when I feel like going into boymode, and let anyone who thinks it’s weird or stupid hang.
  5. Draft a budget and stick to it for at least three months in a row.

I figure, if I stick to only five of them, that should be manageable. A theoretical sixth is “Write moar,” but like I said, realistic. I’ll try, of course, but I’m not setting myself any goals anymore. :/

(On the subject of #4, my birthday/Christmas present to myself this year is going to be a compression vest/shirt. Possibly one of these — they’re in the US, but I’ve heard good things about Underworks.)

Plans for today: go out to buy Christmas presents for the fam and Lush stuff for me, come home, have a long hot bath. Mmmm. :)

I have no idea why the fuck I'm awake at this hour of the morning, but I've used my time productively, at least. "Story Management System": done, up, and working. \o/

Next up: image gallery software. Preferably one that doesn't take up 80 freakin' MB. And will let me play with the layout. *grabs stick, goes hunting*

[ETA] Anyone have any ideas on what to call a freelance webdesign business> [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta suggested Minerva (or Athena) Webdesign on Wednesday, but a quick google tells me someone got there first, woe. :( [/ETA]

One day of semi-intensice coding later, I have a system that more or less does what I want it to do. W00t! \o/ I'm still finishing up the last bits and pieces (setting up a page for editing stories, checking titles across FPS/RPS/Non-fanfic tables, allowing for banner/cover uploads), and generating the title pages the way I want them is going to take a bit more work (mostly because to fully automate them, I'll have to conquer the COUNT function, which, HATE!), but at the end of the day I'll have something that will let me enter information into a form and generate a php file for the story, and then automatically generate the index pages without me having to faff about with them. Plus, it allows for slighly more complex stuff in future. \o/ I say! :D

... Oh hey, I think I managed to find a way to check for duplicates without the count function. Success! Now to tackle the image uploading.

Linkspam of the day. )

Customer quote of the day:

Customer: "Whenever I try and open the SatNav, some writing comes up, why?"
Melle: "I don't know, Sir,that depends on what the writing is. Can you try and open the software and read me the message you get?"
Customer: "I'm calling from the phone, so it's a bit difficult to check right now."
Melle: "... Right. Do you know what the icon says that you press to open the software?" [To make sure he at least has our software. -ed.]
Customer: "No, and I can't check, because I'm calling from the phone."

And then he got snippy when I asked to call back from another phone. PEOPLE! How does that make sense? *headdesk*

And I leave you with this inspirational message, which StumbleUpon wanted me to see just now. <3

Today's plans: try and write own code for story-management system. Also, porn. *cracks knuckles*

... You'll note that it's now noon and I've yet to do either, by the way. Stupid customers. Gah.

This is for my own benefit, mostly, so I'll cut: To Do List for website. )

I should be doing NaNo stuff, or at least poking at website stuff/redesigns/whatever, or doing something productive. Instead, I'm playing Bejeweled. Because apparently I've been transported back to 2001.

Questions for the Magic Eight-Ball that is my friendslist:

1. I'm trying to find a free content management system that will let me have both categories/top level tags (e.g. "quotes," "stories," "art") and tags/subtags (e.g. fandom and pairing tags for the stories). any suggestions? Or would I be better off going with eFiction for the stories and just doing the other pages by hand?

2. I'm starting to accept that it'll be impossible to import my LJ including tags. It'll take me a while, but I can and will back up nearly six years of entries to a wordpress blog, including comments, then re-tag them. I'll find a workaround for the friendslocked ones (although I'd appreciate any tips). What I'd want to know is, is there a way to selectively crosspost to one or more of several LJs? Preferably one that works with shared journals?

3. Any othe recommendations for Wordpress plugins are also welcome.

A scene from this morning:

Someone: *knocks on door*
Melle: *was asleep, wakes up* "Gnurgh?" *gets up, walks to door*
Melle: *hand on doorknob* "Wait, what am I missi--CLOTHES! Right! Augh!" *scrambles*

Turned out to be the gas people checking to make sure we'd all switched our gas off so they can work on the connection today. Still, I guess this shows the perils of sleeping naked. >_<

Wow, first call of the day and already with the assholery. Calling me "darling" or "sweetheart" every other sentence is bad enough, but then trying to haggle on the price for a replacement GPS receiver (yes, it's expensive, but as I pointed out to you, you can get one for much cheaper, and we seriously don't care if you do, I promise), going so far as to try and get it replaced under warranty? No. In fact, fuck no. What the hell is wrong with some people?

After a lot of back and forth with my host's Tech Support, they "ran some updates," and what do you know, suddenly my disk space usage is displaying correctly. (There's a small discrepancy of a few MB, which is about what I expected -- probably some logs or something that's outside my home directory, which is fair enough.) Coincidentally, "running some updates" was what they did to get the e-mail quotas to display correctly as well. Not too impressed here, because I still don't know WTF was going on, and it took four hours of song and dance trying to explain that no, see, a) I've already deleted all the logs in the home dir, and b) those would (and did) show up in the Disk Usage Viewer and thus aren't part of the 488MB that's not in there. So in short, I still don't know WTF was wrong, but at least it's fixed for now.

I now really want to redo my website, and mirror my LJ there and stuff. I know, rationally speaking, that this is me procrastinating on NaNo planning, but I'm not sure I care. Anyway, anyone know of a way to import/export from LJ to Wordpress with comments and tags intact? And if there's a way to friendslock entries in WordPress?

*noodles about with content management software* *pokes things with pointy sticks*

PSA: If your e-mail address contains the word "softcock", please do your friendly neighbourhood tech support people a favour and get another one to use for "official" business, please? Also, why the hell would you advertise that? o_O

I should be working on my NaNovel plotting and planning and worldbuildig. Instead, I'm faffing about with femgeeks, trying to see where all this diskspace is going, and stuff. At least it's semi-productive, even if there are about 500MB I can't bloody find, taking up space. I know at least 150MB of them are somewhere relating to the e-mail, but again: not with the locating. *whacks with stick*

(A-HA! Found the e-mail related ones at least. Still trying to find 488MB that's not accounted for, and my host's tech support is being less than helpful.)

Randomly, what should I do with my Vox account? I keep thinking maybe I can turn it into a proper blog/journal type thing, but I'm a bit late to start doing "Diary of an expat," which was my first impulse. Hm. Thoughts?

Link o' the Day: Get free stuff, stuff Focus on the Family! This is awesome! I just bought the Narnia DVD and a Jesus Rocks t-shirt. W00t!

Ha! My Footie Cup score is slowly gaining again. Go me! Also, speaking of football (Which, when am I not, these days?), att. football fans! I expect at least one of you for chatting purposes today! England v Trinidad&Tobega! Come on, it'll be made of pretty!

(Pst, Tri!)

I need to start bringing my knitting to work again, especially since they're making me do outbound campaigns again. Bah. I mean, eh, it's mindless busywork that allows me to multitask and stuff, but it's a Marketing campaign, which means calling people up and trying to persuade them to take a survey, and bleh. I don't like this.

Aaaand femgeeks and affilates are back up. Thankfully. *toddles off to go plot and stuff*

This week at the game: "A wizard's arse has a light at the end!" (Context? Gondor has no context. Gondor needs no context!)

Today: more faffing about with the wiki, wheee! (If you have [livejournal.com profile] mounthelicon friended, you can go and have a look at it, though there's not much content yet.)

Had another one of my weird-ass dreams, this time about my home town getting blown up. No one died or anything, it just kinda ... got wiped off the face of the planet. And then life went on as usual. My subconcious? Not very subtle, heh.

(Though, on the flipside, if any of you Belgian lot want to come hang out with me when I'm in the country in August, you could come and people-watch. It's fun!)

*tears hair out* Do any of you lot know anything about S2? I'm trying to make an LJ layout that matches my new website layout, but I don't think I can do this. *sobs* Help me, Obi-Wan friendslist, you're my only hope!

(I feel like crap today--my glands are feeling weirdly swollen and painful, and I've felt vaguelyfeverish for the last few days, to the point where I actually bit the bullet and took some Lemsip, which I hate, so you know it's bad. Meh. I want my mummy.)

bubosquared: (work)
( Feb. 10th, 2006 10:08 am)

I love GMail, man. I hardly ever use it, and I really only got it in the first place to nab femgeek as a username before anyone else grabbed it, and to have a reliable backup in case of emergencies, but it's also a very handy way of transferring large files/folders from my home computer to work, and vice-versa.

(Side note: the Google ads on my spam folder are hilarious. "Spam breakfast burritos," people!)

Anyway, this means I can now start working on a layout rehaul and website update, should I so choose. Except I'm uninspired as far as layouts go, right now, possibly because it's been, er, two years since the last one. *cough* Anyone have any ideas they wanna lob at me? I don't like doing layouts with people/fandoms in them (although, maybe I'll do another Dylan one ...), so maybe another seasonal one? Keeping in mind of course that the layouts for my JL and my website tend to be the same, or at least similar, so it has to be something I can stand looking at for hours each day.

To Do List, for my own reference. )

ARGH! I'm trying to get MySQL and this automatic form generator to behave properly and let me create a submission form for Mistletoe Magic, but no dice. *glares at it* I will be victorious!

This scarf continues to vex me as well, despite having switched to a 12cm size 4 circ. I think i might know what's going on, but I'll need to cast on again to know for sure. Gah.

I'm just so not having my week.

Heh. So, apparently, according to the monitoring system, I just managed to make an outbound call, take an inbound Dutch call, and make an internal call simultaneously. Ph34r me and my awesome multitasking skillz! \o/

Knitting progress. )

I know, I planned to have this finished yesterday, but I should know better than to make plans and not incorporate naptime in them. Ahem. Also, since I didn't bring the Gryffindor yarn with me to work, I'll basically just keep knitting until I go home, by which time I will hopefully have made the damn thing wide enough to cover my shoulders and upper arms. (I can't quite check properly while it's on the needles, as it's now a lot wider than the needles, so I kinda un-scrunch half of it and put it around one shoulder to check. Which I'm sure isn't quite accurate. But I digress.)

Looks like I'll be doing MM again this year, then. *makes [livejournal.com profile] babyofthegroup do all the actual work* And all you people volunteering for pinch-hitting, you're nuts. Clearly the brainworms are feating upon my friendslist's brains.

I'm having a conversation over IM with the guy who does our database system, and over the course of five minutes I've just used the word "ticky box" seven times. TICKY BOOOOOX! Wheeee! (Oh, hush, I'm frustrated and cranky, I need some cheering up.)

Plans for today: finish the Scarf of Christmas Past Vomited Back Up, skein and sort all the wool I have so it's easier to store, wind balls for the first Gryffindor scarf.

In other news, some of you may remember that back in 2002, I ran an HP Sercet Santa thing called Mistletoe Magic. Due to laziness and time restraints, I haven't done it the last two years, but now [livejournal.com profile] babyofthegroup has been dropping hints, and I'm considering reviving it.

Take this poll! )

... God I need a fag cigarette.
