One day of semi-intensice coding later, I have a system that more or less does what I want it to do. W00t! \o/ I'm still finishing up the last bits and pieces (setting up a page for editing stories, checking titles across FPS/RPS/Non-fanfic tables, allowing for banner/cover uploads), and generating the title pages the way I want them is going to take a bit more work (mostly because to fully automate them, I'll have to conquer the COUNT function, which, HATE!), but at the end of the day I'll have something that will let me enter information into a form and generate a php file for the story, and then automatically generate the index pages without me having to faff about with them. Plus, it allows for slighly more complex stuff in future. \o/ I say! :D

... Oh hey, I think I managed to find a way to check for duplicates without the count function. Success! Now to tackle the image uploading.

Customer quote of the day:

Customer: "Whenever I try and open the SatNav, some writing comes up, why?"
Melle: "I don't know, Sir,that depends on what the writing is. Can you try and open the software and read me the message you get?"
Customer: "I'm calling from the phone, so it's a bit difficult to check right now."
Melle: "... Right. Do you know what the icon says that you press to open the software?" [To make sure he at least has our software. -ed.]
Customer: "No, and I can't check, because I'm calling from the phone."

And then he got snippy when I asked to call back from another phone. PEOPLE! How does that make sense? *headdesk*

And I leave you with this inspirational message, which StumbleUpon wanted me to see just now. <3

Today's plans: try and write own code for story-management system. Also, porn. *cracks knuckles*

... You'll note that it's now noon and I've yet to do either, by the way. Stupid customers. Gah.

Am trying to re-write my CV into a more functional CV, focussing on skills more than pure work experience. I'm having trouble coming up with skills. Augh. Any suggestions? Anyone?

So, um. I ... seem to have quit smoking. By power of sheer laziness, mostly, so yeah. I'm a bit wibble abouthow I'll hold up at work today, but the physical addiction seems to be pretty much gone, and the habit is less of a problem here than at home, but on the other hand, there's the stress. Ho hum.

Also, my hair is now long enough that I can start slicking it back in classic '50s butch style. As evidenced last Saturday at Sarah's party, where I dressed up as James Dean. You heard me. I kinda liked the look, but not what the gel did to my hair. Still, if I can find a (preferably wetlook) gel that won't fuck up my hair, I've found a good inbetweeny hairstyle, huzzah!

(And yeah, I know I've been sparse lately, but it's winter, and I go a bt quiet in winter. Don't worry about me, I'll be okay.)

So. The good news: my NaNo stuff finally arrived. The annoying news: it was sent to my home address rather than to work, where I had asked it to be sent. The bad news: the handle on my mug was broken. :( Nothing a little superglue couldn't fix, and it's not like I use the handle all that often, but still.

My last call on Friday involved the words "I'm now going to caution you that anything you say can be used in court." He wasn't too pleased that I told him I had to disconnect the call (and did), but you know, if you wanna talk lawsuit, you're gonna have to talk to the lawyers, because I do not get paid enough for this. Gah.

Also from Friday:

A few minutes into the call ...
Kid in Background: Daddy? Daddy! Daddyyyyyyy!
Customer: Go away, go to your mother, I'm on the phone.
A few minutes later ...
Kid in Background: Daddydaddydaddyyyyyyyy!
Customer: Go to your mother! Leave me alone, I'm dead!
Melle: *narrowly avoids anyeurism from held-in laughter*

*pokes intarwebs* I can has fic? It is can be fic time nao?

Was yesterday Sucky Customer Day and no one told me or something? Because in one day, I had one bloke claiming that us refusing to reset the Product Key (so he could reactivate it) of his bought-third-hand software without confirmation of the e-mail address it was activated with is "breach of contract" and blah blah blah, and then another guy refused to believe I was Tech Support because I asked "Sorry, Windows 64 bit?" and then refused to do any troubleshooting because, and this is a DIRECT QUOTE here people, "I don't like you, I want to talk to someone else," and my Level 2 claims he's just an ass like that to everyone, but you know, I'm still not convinced that the fact that I'm a woman didn't have anything to do with it and AUGH!

*twitches*

I, um, here, have a meme (stolen from [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta) to make up for that: Comment, and I will comment back with a picture of the fictional character that most reminds me of you. Then post the same in your journal and join in the fun!

It was the day before NaNo and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except a writer having a complete and utter flailing freakout ...

My NaNo merch hasn't arrived yet, which is annoying me all to hell, but I have a wiki up for plotting and keeping track of worldbuilding and characters and stuff as I go along, and while my flat is a mess, I should be able to clean enough tonight to at least have my bedroom clean enough to write in. And I have characters and a basic starting plot, so I should be fine.

*knock on wood*

E-mail from a customer:

Many thanks that has resolved the problem. Thank you Sophie for your patience - you have restored my faith in customer service - regards Daniel.

I totally win at customer service! (Of course, this is the guy who'd just spent two hours on the phone with his phone company trying to get his phone line disconnected because he's moving, so his standards were probably a bit low, but still. Awesomecakes!)

Spam of the Day

"Context-Free Living!" I already do a lot of that, thanks spammers.

WoW Blithering

My main is halfway through level 68, and even if i skip the group quests, I should be able to hit 70 in another couple of sessions. (Mmm, Outland. XP heaven!) Once I hit 70, I'm thinking of starting a guild to go and do pre-BC endgame content and shit, and levelling help, because I'm nowhere near ready to hit the current endgame stuff, I don't think, and dammit, I want to see these dungeons.

(Anyone Alliance-side on Stormrage want to join an easy-going family-type guild? Anyone Alliance-side on Stormrage at all? I like running people through instances and shit, because when you're level 60-something, Scarlet Monastery is surprisingly zen and calming after the frustration of elite group quests in Outland) and all I ask in return is someone to talk to me while I get my ass gored by elite goats. :D )

Also, I have a wee dwarf pally now, who's currently enjoying the hospitality of the good people of Lakeshire while I finish levelling my hunter, probably getting sloshed while I'm not looking. If anyone sees a red-headed dwarf pally in Lakeshire, be a dear and listen to her tale of PUG woe, would you? (First time I ever quit a PUG. I'm stubborn, but even I'm not that stubborn. I may just end up getting a higher level to run me through or something because augh. But then I'll never get in practise in tanking. Woe.)

My Friends Are More Awesome Than Your Friends (Unless Your Friends Happen To be My Friends As Well)

On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta came over for Robin Hoodage and food, and brought me a DVD player. A purple one.

Best. Fake Girlfriend. EVER. :D

Speaking of Robin Hood ...

Guy, naked and wet and bedraggled. I'm starting to sense a theme here -- this is clearly the season in which all the boys get stripped half-naked and then soaked. I heartily approve! \o/

Other Stuff

I've been batting around the idea lately of getting into freelance web design. Because when people whose site is made in freakin' FrontPage, with the standard blue-underlined links and everything, can get away with charging £200-300 for a four-page website, presumable also made in FrontPage, then I can earn a cool £100-150 for hand-coding that same four-page website in a few hours' work, I'd think.

I've convinced two people at work who have/are setting up their own business to let me design their website for free in return for getting to use them as a portfolio, so including my own site, once I manage to beat it into behaving, that'll be three sites I can show off to potential clients. I'm not expecting to be bringing in the big bucks any time soon, let alone make a living off this, but any extra money is good, innit?

A scene from this morning:

Someone: *knocks on door*
Melle: *was asleep, wakes up* "Gnurgh?" *gets up, walks to door*
Melle: *hand on doorknob* "Wait, what am I missi--CLOTHES! Right! Augh!" *scrambles*

Turned out to be the gas people checking to make sure we'd all switched our gas off so they can work on the connection today. Still, I guess this shows the perils of sleeping naked. >_<

Wow, first call of the day and already with the assholery. Calling me "darling" or "sweetheart" every other sentence is bad enough, but then trying to haggle on the price for a replacement GPS receiver (yes, it's expensive, but as I pointed out to you, you can get one for much cheaper, and we seriously don't care if you do, I promise), going so far as to try and get it replaced under warranty? No. In fact, fuck no. What the hell is wrong with some people?

After a lot of back and forth with my host's Tech Support, they "ran some updates," and what do you know, suddenly my disk space usage is displaying correctly. (There's a small discrepancy of a few MB, which is about what I expected -- probably some logs or something that's outside my home directory, which is fair enough.) Coincidentally, "running some updates" was what they did to get the e-mail quotas to display correctly as well. Not too impressed here, because I still don't know WTF was going on, and it took four hours of song and dance trying to explain that no, see, a) I've already deleted all the logs in the home dir, and b) those would (and did) show up in the Disk Usage Viewer and thus aren't part of the 488MB that's not in there. So in short, I still don't know WTF was wrong, but at least it's fixed for now.

I now really want to redo my website, and mirror my LJ there and stuff. I know, rationally speaking, that this is me procrastinating on NaNo planning, but I'm not sure I care. Anyway, anyone know of a way to import/export from LJ to Wordpress with comments and tags intact? And if there's a way to friendslock entries in WordPress?

*noodles about with content management software* *pokes things with pointy sticks*

PSA: If your e-mail address contains the word "softcock", please do your friendly neighbourhood tech support people a favour and get another one to use for "official" business, please? Also, why the hell would you advertise that? o_O

I should be working on my NaNovel plotting and planning and worldbuildig. Instead, I'm faffing about with femgeeks, trying to see where all this diskspace is going, and stuff. At least it's semi-productive, even if there are about 500MB I can't bloody find, taking up space. I know at least 150MB of them are somewhere relating to the e-mail, but again: not with the locating. *whacks with stick*

(A-HA! Found the e-mail related ones at least. Still trying to find 488MB that's not accounted for, and my host's tech support is being less than helpful.)

Things Not To Ask Tech Support: "Are you as good-looking as your voice makes you sound?" Yeah, um, DO NOT WANT! D:

Also, help me decide what to write for NaNo?

(Also also, sikrit message to [livejournal.com profile] troubleinchina: I HAS TOES! Ten of them! Clearly this means we are SISTERS OMG! And mine have PURPLE TOENAILS BWEE! :D)

PSA of the day: If you're going to throw a hissy fit at a Tech Support Agent, and try to baffle them with Big Words, do make sure you're actually using said Big Words correctly, and that they are actually Big Words. "Default" and "faulty" (as in, "You sold me a faulty product!") do not mean the same thing, and neither word is all that Big. Snarf.

Link of the day: "British forces have denied rumours that they released a plague of ferocious badgers into the Iraqi city of Basra.". A plague of ferocious badgers, people! Beware of Hufflepuffs!

Had a minor epiphany/plot bunny about the fantasy novel I'm poking at. Quick poll: would you read a fantasy novel with a knitting (mage) hero and plot that centers on (magical) knitting? (This should go in my writing journal, technically, but meh, too lazy.)

Work eat brain bah. *zombies*

Here, have some quotes. )

Lunch! Also, I made bread! :D Next step in my Let's Fucking Start Eating Healthier, Biznatch plan: breakfast. I'm trying to stop scarfing down eggs for breakfast, as I east a lot of eggs this way, and there have to be better alternatives. So, Weetabix minis with chocolate (OMG what? it's relatively healthy, and it means I get some milk in me!) and yogurt, because I need the dairy. We'll see how this goes. And then, once that's done, we tackle supper. Man, I feel all grown-up, actually paying attention to my food. :/

Also, OH MY GOD WORK WTF IS UP WITH THE BUSY? Srsl, one call after the other, what the hell. :(

Food post. Mmm, strawberries ...

Spoke to soon about that second week of vacation -- looks like the client are coming over that week to train us. This is the second time they've done this to me, DAMMIT! :( Then again, worst comes to worst I'll just have training in the mornings and take the afternoons off, so it's not too bad. BUT STILL!

In conclusion: OMG LOOK WHAT I MADE BWEE!

Food post, because I've finally both made lunch and remembered to take a photo of it. :D

(I took a second week off because my mum and possibly brother are coming over the week after post-Potterdammerung week, which I already had off. This is the first time in my work career I've had two full weeks off. Er. And people keep asking me where I'm going to go, since obviously that's why I'm taking time off in the middle of summer, right? Yeah, no. And "I'm going TO THE INTERNET!" just gets me weird looks. I'm broke and filled with Schadenfreude, dammit, make my own fun! :(

PSA: Will be without internet access at home until Friday, because I'm a moron. A broke one, to be exact. :/

(Anyone have any good Sims 2 downloads to recommend? Since I have to stay busy somehow?)

Food post backlog: Wednesday, Friday and today. Thursday seems to be missing (dammit!) but was pretty much the same as Friday.

From an e-mail from my Level Two this morning: "Hi All and a hearty and enthusiastic but overall groovy Monday morning to you all," followed by more of this, in the same vein. I am never drinking the machine coffee again. o_O

Cannot cope with work today. Off to Mordor. Send Sam Pippin Éowyn help. *whimper*

ObFoodPost.

Great Spring Cleaning Offensive of '07 update: Mission Accomplished. Took me until 2 AM last night, because I'd slacked off on Saturday -- although to be fair, by the time I'd managed to get all my Boxes o' Crap back up on the shelf where they belong, I'd pretty much depleted my energy levels, because holy shit. Also, note to self: Your big blue suitcase contains a bunch of things you're holding onto for Anna and Don. Remember this for next time, so you don't expect it to be empty and nearly kill yourself dead because you're not expectiong the weight. *facepalm*

Handwarmers update: still MIA; missing, presumed dead. :( And trust me, I looked everywhere in the flat, up to and including behind/under the fridge. there was ... an impressive amount of gunk there, but no handwarmers. I'm at a loss of WTF happened to them, though. unless I left them at my mum's, but I'd think she'd have come across them by now, then. Bleh.

My slacking off on Saturday did lead to one productive thing though, as I stumbled across some tutorials about how to "ink" in PhotoShop using the pen tool. I've experimented a bit, and I think this will be incredibly helpful -- I can draw ... minimally, but it's still better than my inking skills, which are nonexistant, what with the lack of steady hands and stuff. So, experimental doodling time!

Well, after I do these two hours of training, anyway. By which I mean, of course, "After I stretch out less than an hour of material over two hours somehow." Powers of bullshitting, activate!
