Dear internet: Please don't conk out on me like that, it scares me. O_O

If you were paying attention earlier, you may have noticed that I got the LJXP thing working for multiple journals. Oh, yes. It works, bitches. ("What?") ALL TECH WILL FEAR ME AND DESPAIR! \o/ Anyone else want the scripts, let me know. :D

... Why is Richard Mately being really catty on HIGNFY? o_O

*whacks things with sticks* Okay, So. I'm trying to convince LJ-Archive to export my entries, with comments, to XML so I can upload them to my on-site blog. It does this without complaint for [livejournal.com profile] mounthelicon and [livejournal.com profile] craftybrain, and will happily do so for [livejournal.com profile] bubosquared without comments, but trying to export [livejournal.com profile] bubosquared with comments makes it crash on July 2002. Now, granted, this is seven years worth of entries, plus comments, so maybe it's just choking on the sheer volume, but it keeps crashing on the same month, which makes me think it's something specific in that month that's causing the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Error/crash message. )

I have no idea why the fuck I'm awake at this hour of the morning, but I've used my time productively, at least. "Story Management System": done, up, and working. \o/

Next up: image gallery software. Preferably one that doesn't take up 80 freakin' MB. And will let me play with the layout. *grabs stick, goes hunting*

[ETA] Anyone have any ideas on what to call a freelance webdesign business> [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta suggested Minerva (or Athena) Webdesign on Wednesday, but a quick google tells me someone got there first, woe. :( [/ETA]

One day of semi-intensice coding later, I have a system that more or less does what I want it to do. W00t! \o/ I'm still finishing up the last bits and pieces (setting up a page for editing stories, checking titles across FPS/RPS/Non-fanfic tables, allowing for banner/cover uploads), and generating the title pages the way I want them is going to take a bit more work (mostly because to fully automate them, I'll have to conquer the COUNT function, which, HATE!), but at the end of the day I'll have something that will let me enter information into a form and generate a php file for the story, and then automatically generate the index pages without me having to faff about with them. Plus, it allows for slighly more complex stuff in future. \o/ I say! :D

... Oh hey, I think I managed to find a way to check for duplicates without the count function. Success! Now to tackle the image uploading.

Linkspam of the day. )

Customer quote of the day:

Customer: "Whenever I try and open the SatNav, some writing comes up, why?"
Melle: "I don't know, Sir,that depends on what the writing is. Can you try and open the software and read me the message you get?"
Customer: "I'm calling from the phone, so it's a bit difficult to check right now."
Melle: "... Right. Do you know what the icon says that you press to open the software?" [To make sure he at least has our software. -ed.]
Customer: "No, and I can't check, because I'm calling from the phone."

And then he got snippy when I asked to call back from another phone. PEOPLE! How does that make sense? *headdesk*

And I leave you with this inspirational message, which StumbleUpon wanted me to see just now. <3

Today's plans: try and write own code for story-management system. Also, porn. *cracks knuckles*

Before I end up pulling my hair out: any CSS gurus out there want to point me towards the best way to get a footer on a multi-column page? Because Google is coughing up a bunch of ways to do it and I can't seem to find one that works at least in FireFox and AUGH!

Linkspam of the Day, because I discovered Stumbleupon:

  1. WinterBells -- Beautiful flash game, and the music makes it even better.
  2. VisuWords -- An online graphical dictionary. Fascinating in that way that kinda fucks with my brain. (Double-click on some of the bubbles for more fascinatingness!)
  3. Foodpairing -- Not just here because it's a Belgian website, but also because this comes in very handy for people like me who like to experiment with food but don't always have this kind of thing down as common sense.
  4. Low Impact Woodland Home -- a.k.a.: Hobbit House built for £4000 in four months. We wants one, preciousss ....
  5. The Effects of Drugs on Spiders -- Yeah, um, that spider on caffeine? That's so totally me. *hides in shame*
  6. Hang Stan -- Hangman with a pig. And with answers that are much easier to guess than random words. :D
  7. Programer or Serial Killer? -- I got 3/10. I'm pretty much fucked, then, aren't I?
  8. LetterFu -- This just strikes me as kinda charming and awesome. I may actually start writing letters again with this. :D
  9. Guerilla Gardening -- This is just all kinds of awesome and win.
  10. Things Other People Accomplished When They Were Your Age -- In case your self-esteem needs punching.

My brain has had, alternatingly, Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny and Internet People stuck in it since yesterday. I've tried everything to make it stop, but even ABBA can't make this budge. Augh. This probably says something about me, but I don't know if I want to know what, exactly. (Note: This is not an excuse to start singing Badger Badger at me, nor the Hamster Dance song or any other internet meme jingle. This is bad enough as it is.

Work was giving away random stuff, and it appears I have a Mac. It's one of the iMacs, the G3, but it's got OS10 on it according to those in the know, and it's justb for faffing abouton, so. Yaye?

My NaNo procastination, let me show you it ...

(What? At least it's nominally productive, and it's something for my portfolio, if nothing else.)

bubosquared: (ramblin' mind)
( Oct. 18th, 2007 10:50 am)

I should be doing NaNo stuff, or at least poking at website stuff/redesigns/whatever, or doing something productive. Instead, I'm playing Bejeweled. Because apparently I've been transported back to 2001.

Questions for the Magic Eight-Ball that is my friendslist:

1. I'm trying to find a free content management system that will let me have both categories/top level tags (e.g. "quotes," "stories," "art") and tags/subtags (e.g. fandom and pairing tags for the stories). any suggestions? Or would I be better off going with eFiction for the stories and just doing the other pages by hand?

2. I'm starting to accept that it'll be impossible to import my LJ including tags. It'll take me a while, but I can and will back up nearly six years of entries to a wordpress blog, including comments, then re-tag them. I'll find a workaround for the friendslocked ones (although I'd appreciate any tips). What I'd want to know is, is there a way to selectively crosspost to one or more of several LJs? Preferably one that works with shared journals?

3. Any othe recommendations for Wordpress plugins are also welcome.

A scene from this morning:

Someone: *knocks on door*
Melle: *was asleep, wakes up* "Gnurgh?" *gets up, walks to door*
Melle: *hand on doorknob* "Wait, what am I missi--CLOTHES! Right! Augh!" *scrambles*

Turned out to be the gas people checking to make sure we'd all switched our gas off so they can work on the connection today. Still, I guess this shows the perils of sleeping naked. >_<

Wow, first call of the day and already with the assholery. Calling me "darling" or "sweetheart" every other sentence is bad enough, but then trying to haggle on the price for a replacement GPS receiver (yes, it's expensive, but as I pointed out to you, you can get one for much cheaper, and we seriously don't care if you do, I promise), going so far as to try and get it replaced under warranty? No. In fact, fuck no. What the hell is wrong with some people?

After a lot of back and forth with my host's Tech Support, they "ran some updates," and what do you know, suddenly my disk space usage is displaying correctly. (There's a small discrepancy of a few MB, which is about what I expected -- probably some logs or something that's outside my home directory, which is fair enough.) Coincidentally, "running some updates" was what they did to get the e-mail quotas to display correctly as well. Not too impressed here, because I still don't know WTF was going on, and it took four hours of song and dance trying to explain that no, see, a) I've already deleted all the logs in the home dir, and b) those would (and did) show up in the Disk Usage Viewer and thus aren't part of the 488MB that's not in there. So in short, I still don't know WTF was wrong, but at least it's fixed for now.

I now really want to redo my website, and mirror my LJ there and stuff. I know, rationally speaking, that this is me procrastinating on NaNo planning, but I'm not sure I care. Anyway, anyone know of a way to import/export from LJ to Wordpress with comments and tags intact? And if there's a way to friendslock entries in WordPress?

*noodles about with content management software* *pokes things with pointy sticks*

Quick heads-up: I'm off to Dublin tomorrow until Sunday evening, and I need to pack and clean toonight, so I'll likely not really be on from when I leave work until Monday morning. Nobody panic if I disappear, in other words. :p

Still not planning on moving, btw, but knowing that there is a way to move my lj, all six and a half years of it, including (threaded) comments, to a wordpress blog, has me intrigued. There may be a bunch of crossposting in my future. From LJ to wordpress rather than vice versa, I suspect, because: icons! Oooh, unless they have a plugin for that too? *googles* They do! :D

PSA: Will be without internet access at home until Friday, because I'm a moron. A broke one, to be exact. :/

(Anyone have any good Sims 2 downloads to recommend? Since I have to stay busy somehow?)

Food post backlog: Wednesday, Friday and today. Thursday seems to be missing (dammit!) but was pretty much the same as Friday.

From an e-mail from my Level Two this morning: "Hi All and a hearty and enthusiastic but overall groovy Monday morning to you all," followed by more of this, in the same vein. I am never drinking the machine coffee again. o_O

Cannot cope with work today. Off to Mordor. Send Sam Pippin Éowyn help. *whimper*

Aaaand I went out in the sun for ten minutes and already I'm sun burnt. Fuckin' evil yellow eye!

Looks like the kerfuffle ought to be winding down soon, hopefully. I know people are still gonna be pissed at LJ/6A for a while at least, but it looks like I won't have to leave LJ to keep up with fandom, which, thank god. I have my entire adult life documented in this journal, folks, not to mention my permanent account, and I dun like changes. I tried leaving LJ for nine months, once, and I'm not doing that again. Although [livejournal.com profile] anatsuno brought up a good point about the centralisation, and I'm going to be thinking about decentralising a bit, probably. Whatever that'll mean for me, of course. And that's the most substantial thing I'm going to say about the situation, because other people are better at that sort of thing, and I tend to hide from kerfuffles a lot, especially when stressed. *goes back into cave to go draw cave art pr0n*

In completely unrelated news: food post! And speaking of food, best bento ever, holy crap!

Also, I need some help with Outlook Express. (Don't look at me like that, they make us use it at work, boo.) I have several shared mailboxes I need to keep an eye on. Unfortunately, the automatic send/receive thing keeps hanging on the shared boxes, and then not telling me about it, so I have to keep remembering to go cancel it and check manually, which means I often don't get e-mails to my own inbox until an hour after they were sent. Is there any way to disable automatic send/receive for the shared boxes?

It's Towel Day! Do you know where your towel is? I do! :D

I also know exactly where my phone and USB drive are: at home. Dammit! Luckily, reinstalling FF to my actual computer brought back all my settings and bookmarks, even if they are somewhat out of date. But my WiPs and stuff are on the USB stick as well, and I would of course do this after making sure, yesterday, do catch up on backlog and open cases, thus freeing up all of today to write/draw/knit. I mean, yeah, the wingfic is in my AlphaSmart, but still! I feel lost without my Gríma. :(

No food post today, as I also forgot my freakin' lunch. (Also forgot to bring something for my co-worker i've been promising to bring in all week, despite remembering it this morning and putting it in a bag and everything, all ready to go. I an the very model of an airhead today, augh.)

[ETA] *obsessively checks work e-mail for news on level 2 job* Come on, dammit! [/ETA]

Payday is here! That means I'm now having to decide something. So, obviously, I'm asking you lot for help.

[Poll #965744]

[ETA] I should note here that the first question is not an either/or situation. I am perfectly willing to buy several bits of new electronics with the excuse of "Livejournal told me to!" :D [/ETA]

Cut for rambling about OSes, computer upgrades, and other geekery. )

Oooooo-kaaaaay, a customer's problem just randomly decided to go away as he was explaining it to me. That's right, PH34R ME and my powers of D00M! \o/

... And then the universe smacked me down for my hubris by sending me a bloke whose e-mail addy starts is "dr.big.job@[snip]," and who, in a single call, did things like double-clicking on a file I asked him to locate (I hate happy clickers), "Delete key? Have I got one of those then?", and in response to my request to "select all," went "select WHO?" AUGH. I know I'd be out of a job if everyone was tech-savvy, but for the love of GOD, people, computer knowledge has no correlation to your ability to follow instructions. I'm perfectly willing to clarify and dumb down if needed, but I'm about to start making people take an oath before I help them that they will follow my instructions, my full instructions, and only my instructions, so help them God and a clue-by-four.

And don't even get me started on happy clicker type techs, who should really fucking know better than to mess around with software they don't support (I'm looking at you, T-Mobile) and especially shouldn't just randomly start deleting crap. WTF, over. (Quoth the customer: "I should've known he didn't know what he was doing when the first thing he did was take out the card and blow on the contacts and into the slot." Me, thinking: "Heh. I spot a former NES owner ...")

Is it the weekend yet?

Aw, crap, they've finally caught on and blocked gmail from the work network. :( *grumbles*

On the bright side, today is filled with nice customers who e-mail to say how well I helped them (yaye!) and to say things like (in response to my asking them to give us a call) "I tried to call today [yesterday -ed] but then heard it was just before closing time, so I'll be trying again tomorrow." Bless your heart, sir.

Somebody please slap me so I can focus om something, instead of bouncing back and forth between a gazillion things all the time? I need more coffee, stat!

As fg.net is down at the moment, could someone please do me a favour and upload a perl script for me? I just need to run it once to check my IBAN and get the correct checksum, and this crap won't run in windows itself. *puppy eyes* Nevermind! :D
