I should probably find a more constructive outlet for my history geek tendencies, because right now I keep thinking someone ought to make a website or a wiki about the cultural history of the internet and/or fandom so I can go and get all nostalgic about it. Something like this, only more so, and mentioning things like “Remember when Hotmail wasn’t yet owned by Microsoft?” and stuff like that.

… I kinda can’t wait to be old and crab at the Kids These Days about how I remember an internet before LOLCats and say things like “Now, back in the days when YahooGroups was still eGroups, but after OneList …” I have issues, I know.

My NaNo procastination, let me show you it ...

(What? At least it's nominally productive, and it's something for my portfolio, if nothing else.)

A scene from this morning:

Someone: *knocks on door*
Melle: *was asleep, wakes up* "Gnurgh?" *gets up, walks to door*
Melle: *hand on doorknob* "Wait, what am I missi--CLOTHES! Right! Augh!" *scrambles*

Turned out to be the gas people checking to make sure we'd all switched our gas off so they can work on the connection today. Still, I guess this shows the perils of sleeping naked. >_<

Wow, first call of the day and already with the assholery. Calling me "darling" or "sweetheart" every other sentence is bad enough, but then trying to haggle on the price for a replacement GPS receiver (yes, it's expensive, but as I pointed out to you, you can get one for much cheaper, and we seriously don't care if you do, I promise), going so far as to try and get it replaced under warranty? No. In fact, fuck no. What the hell is wrong with some people?

After a lot of back and forth with my host's Tech Support, they "ran some updates," and what do you know, suddenly my disk space usage is displaying correctly. (There's a small discrepancy of a few MB, which is about what I expected -- probably some logs or something that's outside my home directory, which is fair enough.) Coincidentally, "running some updates" was what they did to get the e-mail quotas to display correctly as well. Not too impressed here, because I still don't know WTF was going on, and it took four hours of song and dance trying to explain that no, see, a) I've already deleted all the logs in the home dir, and b) those would (and did) show up in the Disk Usage Viewer and thus aren't part of the 488MB that's not in there. So in short, I still don't know WTF was wrong, but at least it's fixed for now.

I now really want to redo my website, and mirror my LJ there and stuff. I know, rationally speaking, that this is me procrastinating on NaNo planning, but I'm not sure I care. Anyway, anyone know of a way to import/export from LJ to Wordpress with comments and tags intact? And if there's a way to friendslock entries in WordPress?

*noodles about with content management software* *pokes things with pointy sticks*

Quick heads-up: I'm off to Dublin tomorrow until Sunday evening, and I need to pack and clean toonight, so I'll likely not really be on from when I leave work until Monday morning. Nobody panic if I disappear, in other words. :p

Still not planning on moving, btw, but knowing that there is a way to move my lj, all six and a half years of it, including (threaded) comments, to a wordpress blog, has me intrigued. There may be a bunch of crossposting in my future. From LJ to wordpress rather than vice versa, I suspect, because: icons! Oooh, unless they have a plugin for that too? *googles* They do! :D

Cut for rambling about OSes, computer upgrades, and other geekery. )

Oooooo-kaaaaay, a customer's problem just randomly decided to go away as he was explaining it to me. That's right, PH34R ME and my powers of D00M! \o/

... And then the universe smacked me down for my hubris by sending me a bloke whose e-mail addy starts is "dr.big.job@[snip]," and who, in a single call, did things like double-clicking on a file I asked him to locate (I hate happy clickers), "Delete key? Have I got one of those then?", and in response to my request to "select all," went "select WHO?" AUGH. I know I'd be out of a job if everyone was tech-savvy, but for the love of GOD, people, computer knowledge has no correlation to your ability to follow instructions. I'm perfectly willing to clarify and dumb down if needed, but I'm about to start making people take an oath before I help them that they will follow my instructions, my full instructions, and only my instructions, so help them God and a clue-by-four.

And don't even get me started on happy clicker type techs, who should really fucking know better than to mess around with software they don't support (I'm looking at you, T-Mobile) and especially shouldn't just randomly start deleting crap. WTF, over. (Quoth the customer: "I should've known he didn't know what he was doing when the first thing he did was take out the card and blow on the contacts and into the slot." Me, thinking: "Heh. I spot a former NES owner ...")

Is it the weekend yet?

Apparently, the client is coming to do training in the last week of March, so we can't take days off in that week. This would of course be the week [livejournal.com profile] dramaturgy is coming to visit. *shakes tiny fist of impotent rage*

But then this was delivered to my work, courtesey of [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta, so I is a happy geek. :D I love my friends. ^_____^

I have acquired this weekend yet another piece of electronics. Please welcome Gríma the flash drive, who is joining Legolas the computer, Gimli the Alphasmart, Samwise the iPod, and Éowyn the mobile phone. I'm statring to run out of LotR references. Crap.

(I've transferred my various folder to it in which I was keeping old/abandoned WiPs and bunnies, and thus might be posting some random drablets over at [livejournal.com profile] mounthelicon later on, but for now, can I just note once again that I have no idea what I was on in 2001, and thus take no responsability for some of the stuff I said/wrote back then? Thank you.)

Work is bleh and also augh. But after this week, I have a whole, glorious week of Random Vacation during which I plan to do nothing but write, have lunch with various people, play WoW, and loiter about Edinburgh. \o/

And speaking of WoW, I finally got hit on for the first time yesterday-- not on my female night elf main, though, but on my human male alt, by a guy looking for another guy. I'm vastly amused by this, somehow. :D

Pictures to come tonight, btw, so get your requests in while you can!

My work computer has randomly decided it doesn't have a network card anymore, so I'm on another computer until IT comes and fixes it, augh. I miss my own space, dammit! Not to mention all my files and settings and bookmarks and a mouse that's on the right side of the keyboard and has a scroll wheel and augh!

I have, however, managed to do something vaguely productive, and updated my calendar. Feel free to add stuff you think I should show up for.

Quick question to the geeks on my flist: Can I use my copy of Windows XP to install on someone's computer with their OEM serial number?

One of my co-workers has the Indiana Jones theme as her mobile phone ringtone. IT MUST BE MINE!

... Scribbled on my notepad some time yesterday: "Snakes on a plane: the RP?" Dear self: no.)

RP funnies for the win! Some favourites. )

And then I lost my electricity card. *facepalm* Thankfully, the nice lady at Powergen sent me out a new one and gave me a number I can give the shop to use instead of the card, so I can actually buy electricity vouchers and not be in the freakin' dark and shit.

Revised To Do List )

Also, from [livejournal.com profile] dantesvendetta:

Batman is blatantly in league with the Russians: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6177531.stm .Scroll down and look at the logo on the floor of the new intelligence building. Which may explain how they killed off that spy dude.

Ugh. First call on a Monday morning should not be from an asshole who gets belligerent when asked to pull the fuck over because we're not allowed to talk to people while they're driving, for reasons that should be bleedin' obvious.

(Amusingly enough, he actually asked to be "transferred to another customer service representative, as you're clearly not one of the nice ones." </F_W Cabal injoke>)

I really hate calls like that, because even though they don't bother me per se, they often trigger an adrenalin rush that leaves my hands shaking for like five, ten minutes afterwards, which is incredibly annoying.

On the bright side, my working week is two days long this week, woohoo!

Also, this looks interesting and I should therefore stay far, far away from it.

Gnr. Today is very much a Dogbert Day.

Realisation of the day: with my graphics card, I can connect my computer to my TV, and thus watch downloaded stuff on TV rather than on my computer screen. Yay for technology!

*flops* Is it Friday yet? This has been the busiest week in ages, between the new-computer-and-OMG-leak weekend, Mags visiting on Monday, dinner with jane on Tuesday, game yesterday, and game today, my first evening off will be tomorrow. I've not done the dishes in a week, and I have laundry to do, and general relaxing and writing!

On the up side, I just took my first tech support call, and I only had to ask for help once, and the akswer to that question was "Yeah, that needs to be escalated," so I think I did pretty well. I definitely felt pretty confident, and I don't think it showed that it was my first call, which is good. This confirms my theory that what reall counts in this job is how confident you are on the phone, how well you can blag, and your problem-spotting and information-gathering skills. The actual product you support is kind of secondary to those.

I called T-Mobile's customer service yesterday and was helped greatly with most of the problems I have, but now my phone keeps disconnecting itself from the PC whenever I try to sync the contacts (both at work and at home, so it's the phone and not the computer) and I cannot get the bloody e-mail application to connect to my gmail. *glares at it* The good news, of course, is that I can always just stomp upstairs to go and whinge at Nokia support, heh.

Five Things Meme to come ... soon. Probably later today.

[ETA] Also, come hell or high water, and whether I get done cleaning by then or not, I'm going to a coffeeshop to write on Sunday. And to relax for a bit. [/ETA]

So I'm thinking of switching to an actual contract mobile, and finally giving in an getting a fancy phone. (I suspect I'm temporarily insane, but whatever. I resisted for years, bu I want a camera phone, dammit!) Anyone got any recommendations? I was thinking of staying with Virgin so I could keep my number, but that doesn't seem to be possible. Hrm.

Fucking football fans under my fucking window at fucking three in the fuckng morning fucking singing "The Hearts are havin' a partyyyyy," and YOU DON'T SAY, I TOTALLY HAD NOT NOTICED THAT! SHUT UP! *headpillow* And then I overslept, and gaaaaah. My icon has never been more applicable.

I want this. Badly.

Realisation: I won't be able to do the semi-traditional European Song Festival chat-in this year, as my dad will be here for it. Bah, I say. :(

Dear diary,

Today I was picky1 and my brain was porny.

Today I was kidnapped by old DOS games2, never to be seen again. It was the best day ever.

1 Well, the trainers did ask for feedback! But still:
Trainer: Thanks for your time, and we'll be taking all your remarks into account, of course.
Melle: ... Why is everyone looking at me?

2 OMG Prince of Persia! King's Quest! *flail*

In which our herione's life is turned into a text adventure. )

In other news, what is with all the people calling up to get documents/images/info from us the day before (or even of, and in one case after) a deadline? Dude, lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine. Now stop calling me and wait for someone to call you back. And switch to decaf, jeez.

[ETA] I should be allowed to just hang the fuck up on anyone who mocks my accent. (Not, oddly enough, a UK call, but a Dutch person finding this whole "Aww, look at the Belgian, she thinks she can talk, like real people!" thing unbelievably hilarious, apparently. Fucker. Die in a gorram fire.[/ETA]
